rotted out heat shield above cats.

The heat shield on my 98 2 door is rotting away and now making contact with the cats. About 50% of it is gone. GM welded these shields to the body so replacing it would be a process which would involve dropping the exhaust. Has anyone had this issue? What was your fix?

I'm in the same boat if anyone has any thoughts on this - appears the part isn't available anymore - GM Part No.: 15740471.

Anyone just gotten rid of it? Mine can't really be doing much at this point anyway . . .
