My rear end's axle bearings are growling & also getting gear whine, on an 8.5" gov-lok G80 . Thinking to drop in a remanufactured rear end, rather than risk rebuilding old unit with some shop that may or may not do a good job.

> > Anyone have experience with remanufactured rear axle assemblies from ATK VEGE ?
These are the ones sold thru NAPA & Autozone.

Any other well known reman companies I should consider?

Turns out ATK-VEGE's remanufactured engines & virtually non-existent customer service get horrible, bad reviews.

Example I read - a guy received engine with 2 mismatched heads that didn't even use same spark plug! Second engine he received had same problem.

Another example - a "remanufactured" chrysler engine was received that had a non-Chrysler, aftermarket, mexican-made block.

I also read ATK's warranty carefully, and all they do is provide a $50/hr credit to an "authorized" repair shop. No competent legitimate shop has labor rates that low in So Calif

I cannot imagine why their reman rear ends would be any better.

BTW, this guy on a Jeep forum did some research on engine reman companies -- I havent checked yet if any of them also reman rear ends -- but most of these reman companies rate poorly:

I may look for a local rear end specialist for a rebuild instead. Not easy to to do in SoCalif, where 90% of the cars seem to be tired old Hyundais & Kias, or leased BMWs that get returned back every 3 yrs.

Glenn's Alignment in Costa Mesa does rear ends and this guy won't have clowns working for him. Hard man to work for because he doesn't have much tolerance for mistakes. I recommend him to everyone and never had a complaint.

I worked there for a bit before I moved on to dealerships.

Thanks! Do you know if there's any one tech in particular, that specializes in rear ends?

Also, I'd guess they do front end rebuilds? My '94 4WD K-Blazer w/ 250K miles is ready to replace everything on front suspension.

They're a little out of my way, about 30 miles, but I wouldn't mind the extra distance if they do good work. I'm very fussy about workmanship, seems like "Mr Glenn" could be my type of guy.

If you're running 6 lugs have you considered a salvage yard 14 bolt sf? Or someone parting out their truck on cl?

Yes, I have 6-lug. Read some threads on this swap, but it did not seem to be a 100% direct bolt-in, and I also want to avoid salvage yard. Concerned I'd end up rebuilding the salvage yard 14-bolt with an unpredictable expense.

If you have the money to spend......http://www.currieenterprises.com/
Currie stuff is definitely nice and they do have a top-notch reputation. But they don't seem to build any 8.5" GM rear ends, everything on their website is Ford 9" or Dana. Despite the shortcomings of gov-lok 8.5", I want to stay stock ... but I might consider upgrading to True-Trac if I rebuild existing rear end.
