Would it be worth regearing my current setup from 3.73 to 4.10? Looking for more pulling power while passing at freeway speeds. Any suggestions?

Tire size? If you're pulling a heavy load all the time, it would help some, yes.

Otherwise, 4.10s are not a highway friendly gear for close to stock tire sizes. You run out of rev fast. I'm at 2500 RPM around 105 kph (65 mph). That's on 265s, unloaded. Truck details in sig.

Running 265's, just seems to run out of steam when i need to pull out and pass. Should I look at putting a different motor in? I was thinking 383 stroker w/ vortec heads. My dad had a built 350 in his 87 that pulled like a demon even when passing i mean it would get up and flat get going even pulling his camper and horse trailer.

my 3.73's are plenty with my 285's, but I have 55 more horse to help me out.... (compared to Wstrnsky, not you)

I'm at only 2000-2100 at 70 mph, 1650 rpms at 55-60 plenty of passing power

Would it be worth it regearing to 4.10 for me? Especially if I got 315 tires? Would it be enough to really notice for the work?

There is a basic chart which will give you an idea of what you're looking at for power vs. mileage. I had that kicking around saved, I found it on this forum somewhere but I can't remember where.

This page is extremely useful for calculating revs/tire size

In your case (when you get 35s)
4.10: easier to find, better mileage
4.56: hard to find (think: regear), better power

For a more daily-driver oriented rig, I would probably go for 4.10s. That's up to you though.

just remember that chart is in 3rd gear. so multiply that by .7 to get the overdrive rpms.

as for going from 3.73 to 4.10 isnt going to be worth it. if you find a new axle with them in it it may be the best way to do it, but having to regear its not. that change in ratio is only going to raise the rpms up by 300 or so.

Thanks guys- so when I bump up to 35 inch tires don't both with my gears until they go out? 3.73 should be enough, and when they go swap in a 14 bolt 4.10 or 4.56, depending on what the truck is going to be used for more.

if your going to 35's i would go to 4.56 no question. if you have a 10 bolt i'd look for a 14 bolt to swap in the new 4.56 and a locker of your choice. then swap it in and convert the front diff if you have one.

35's and 3:73 puts too much stress on the trans, even 4:10 will make it constantly shift out of o.d. on the highway

okay... I know some guys get a way with 3:42 and 35" (ChrisAU, iEnding) are those just time bombs?

Is this an issue big enough that it would be a very bad idea to move up to my 6" lift and 35"s without regearing right away? (and yes, I do have a front differential, haha)
