Hi,

I installed new ring and pinion. After finishing everything and putting oil in, I rotated the pinion. I noticed, there's a strange, kind of slight clunking sound at every rotation at the same spot. I guess there's some kind of defect in a pinion tooth.

I was thinking about first draining it and looking at it. Then, if looks good, to rotate it by engine in the car. And then, if it sounds good, to take a ride and inspect the ring gear.

What do you think? Is there even a chance this gear set could work?

I think ...
you’ll kill the ring and or pinion.
If it’s clunking draining it and “looking at it” won’t scare it right.

You need to check back lash and blue the gears for wear pattern.
I HIGHLY recommend getting someone to show you a few gear set ups before you try one yourself
And no YouTube doesn’t count IMO.
Since you’re already balls deep the next best thing is to act like an **** ocd nut jobber and take 17 minutes for each 1 minute required to check something .
Check your back lash
Walk away come back and check it again.
Blue the gears 4 times
I would also make sure you have new bearings in there

Thanks!
You're right, I better get the clunk away before proceeding.

If there's not any clear visible fault in the pinion, maybe changing the setup a little will help.
Backlash is about .007", so it's close to the low limit for 5-cut gears.
