Must haves for in-truck toolkit

...I think this thread has gotten away from tool kits a bit...

Here is what I found to use as a packing list for my tools. I didn't buy this set I just used it as a guide. I had to add a few specific pieces along the way but in general this is the tool kit I have. The intention with this set was not a "get home tool kit" I use to do a lot of stuff and I was constantly working with friends and family away from my garage and I like to have a basic set of tools.

Anybody remember when you could drive across country with a screwdriver, crescent wrench, matchbook, and a points file.

My recently acquired '93 had a contractor box already in the bed. None of the latches worked and one was permanently locked. After tracking down the manufacturer and determining that they wanted to rob me for two latches I found replacements on the 'bay for considerably less. It works, it locks but my thought is just to keep a few inexpensive HF type tools there for the present. Thus far, metric and SAE sockets and end wrenches, a screwdriver set etc. In short... whatever I have been using to fix up the truck usually ends up in the toolbox.

Anybody remember when you could drive across country with a screwdriver, crescent wrench, matchbook, and a points file.

Thats still pretty true for these trucks, especially the non vortec trucks. Even if you can’t fix it with some tape and junk you find on the side of the road, you can buy almost every part for these things at any auto store. I always get a kick out of how cheap and easy buying parts is for my truck.

One more item I have added that I didn't see listed (but may have missed it) is a 50 foot new roll of paracord. That and a roll of ductape will get you out of a LOT of trouble!

For the short term most of mine will be a junkyard kit.

I am restocking my truck. I moved "Home" between Christmas and New Years 2017/2018. It was a rough winter and spring so far but I'm getting back in the swing of things.

Remember I don't stock my truck for what may happen to the truck, I stock it so I have tools and supplies for what I come across. For me its about having the tools and supplies I need mobile all the time, I hardly ever have the option to take it back to the garage.

So far this year using mostly just the tools I keep in my vehicle I have replaced the alternator and radiator in my wife's minivan, tow strap towed a car off the highway and 20 miles back to the homestead to change the alternator in a coworkers car, replaced all 6 batteries in my moms golf cart, I have done a bunch of small repairs (battery, ignition switch, choke cable, drive belt and solenoid) on my moms ridding mower, front brakes on my VW Golf, the blower resistor in a 2005 chevy truck, mounted 4 tires om my sisters minivan, and last night I mounted new 8" tires on my Harbor Freight trailer.

This year I want to spend some time salvaging parts at a local auto parts junk yard, a John Deere specific salvage yard, and I want to be ready to grab items of opportunity while I'm unloading scrap at the local recycle yard.
