First time posting on here, so I’m not for sure I’m in the right spot. But, I have a 91 GMC Sierra 2500 with the moon gauges that slide. I have been wanting to swap it with a new cluster that has the needle gauge, and a tach. I have a parts truck that is a 97, and it has a needle cluster. How much modification would it take to make it work in my truck? Or would I be better off finding one closer to my year?

The '97 cluster isn't going to work. You'll want to look for a '91 needle cluster. They're out there, but they were one year only and apparently pretty rare. According to some other posts I've seen it's pretty much a drop in swap for the moonies, you just have to move a few wires in the connector.

From what I understand it's a lot of work to swap a '92+ cluster into a pre-'92 truck.

Thanks man, I just bought one tonight that has a tach gauge built in that came out of a 91. Pretty lucky find. Any ideas if it’ll be plug and play or will I have to connect the wire from coil into the wire harness?

The wire should already be there. If not it's the extra grey or white wire on the coil that does not connect to the distributor.

Somebody will pipe up in a minute with more specifics/threads that have everything you need. We're a helpful bunch!
