EXTREME Grinding going into 2WD

its so bad that the vehicle must be shut off, then shifted into 2WD, then restarted.

the transmission is of course in neutral for all of this (as is should be).
i only shift into 4x4 HIGH at very slow speed. 4x4 LOW is always a dead stop.

but yeah..... this basically means that the transfer case it roasted, right? time to R-R? rebuild or replace?....

I would check the oil in the transfer case....may just be low

(this is actually on a truck im looking to buy.... it shifts and holds 2wd fine (popping out of gear is a clear sign that its effed) but yeah.... i should check it before i hand over cash)
