I was inspecting my brothers newfound 2003, 5.3L.. 12 footer. Nice truck.
I spotted what had been driving me nuts for decades with an actual factory made piece fulfilling those two extra holes on the front hangers, rear suspension.
my 1996 gmc is one.. predrilled spots, no fancy extra piece.

I did some measuring, went and got some home depot angle iron...
anybody done this?

the straw the broke the back was looking at my neighbors 1995 gmc, the verylast of TBI.. less than 1 year older than my 1996.

the frame was gone at the spots where the missing bracket tortures my mind.
half the miles, less than 1 year apart.. I attribute my 1996 multiport lasting to a 4 wire alternator, and my electrical masterminding (I dropped power consumption to 8 times less)

not sure why, other than great owners why this 363k mile has gone gold.
no end in sight.

this is my 1996 xcab.

I even repaired an overload on a reciever hitch, from decades past.
straight and smooth.

anyway, looking for actual mishaps, repairs, and mods on this area all the way to the back.
I got the tails done, added 900 pound extra in the leafs, and got to thinking of that extra dangle. :)

slow going here I guess..
good to post anyway.
I installed one today, with some trimming needed and one more bolt.
where frame is very good, I noticed nothing.. until backing up.
no more reverse hop.

will add the other one symmetrically and reveal final photos.
I could break the frame in half and weld it.. I have done repairs at the tails already.
So I was itchy at first to give the bracket some weld.
I then found the spring bolt...
I must use all bolts to be able to remove the spring later on.

As no two gmt400 are alike. This one is factory v8 manual. I ponder the 3/4 to half ton mix and match includes frame pieces.
this one sure as hell proven strong.
been through hell and back..
cruise on 80 smooth as can be.

it may be my sloppy LS turbo chassis in time.

You talking about the overload spring perches? I'm curious to see your end point, I get reverse wheel hop going up my steep ass driveway. Never notice it any other time, actually happens in both my 400's

Sounds like you are chasing the same part I am. They were used in 3/4 ton truck and up, and F44 and C5Z aka heavy half trucks. There are 3 designs. Two rivet on and one bolts on and I can't figure out any rhyme or reason as to when each design was used.
