My 89 GM 10 bolt 8.5 inch rear has 2.73 gears in it. I want to put at least 3.73 ratio gears in it but not sure if the original carrier will need to be changed. I havent dealt with the 10 bolts much but know the old Chevelle 12 bokts used two different carriers depending on what ratio gears were used. Whats the lowest ratio (3.73, 4.10, 4.56, etc.) that I can use on a 2.73 carrier?

Thanks.

You might be better off swapping the rear end entirely, with the gears you want. Cheaper I would think. Assuming your 2 wheel drive.

It would be cheaper, but I know this rear is in pretty much perfect shape, no pitting or wear on the outer axles, ring gears look in great shape, and very clean inside. If I get a used rear that needs work it could end up costing a bit also.
