As others have stated, make sure the 4L80E is solid (maybe look at a shift kit, etc if you want, but not necessary) but then what I did on my 'burb was to build a 383 to take the place of the 350. I know it won't do 510 lb-ft of torque but mine is over 400 and pulling a 6000 lb camper it has no issues at all, where the 350 would DO it but not happily. I built the engine myself and it cost me around $3,000 to do. Crate motor version (HT383 from GM) is around $5,000 I think but you get the warranty too. Would be pretty much plug and play vs all the changes you'll need for the 502.

It's been said already, but you gotta keep in mind that, while you'll be able to haul more, you still can't LEGALLY haul more.

rebuilding the 4l80e is probably the best bet as well
