5 Speed Shifter Knob Redeux.

Hey guys, For those of you have standard trannys and are tired of the stock shifter knob, or the original has broken/fallen off/gotten lost, ect.
The NV3500 stock shifter has a goofy setup. It's got a reduced shaft with no threads. Finding a replacement knob is a serious PIA.
So, I fixed mine with a simple fab anybody can do.

What you need-
3/8-16 allthread
3/8-16 nut
11/32 drill bit
9/16 wrench
Angle grinder w/cutoff wheel or sawzall or hacksaw
3/8-16 tap
threadlock

Cut the reduced part of the shifter shaft down to the rubber.

You must be registered for see images attach

Enlarge the hole with 11/32 drill bit.

You must be registered for see images attach

Tap the hole with 3/8-16 tap

You must be registered for see images attach

Run nut down onto allthread then cut allthread to 3"-4" long. Round edges

You must be registered for see images attach

Apply threadlocker onto bottom of althread and thread into shifter with lock nut. Adjust to desired height.

You must be registered for see images attach

Thread new shift knob onto allthread and tighten with locknut.

You must be registered for see images attach

You must be registered for see images attach

Thats it. Now you can easily change your shift knob to whatever aftermarket knob you choose.

Looks great! Only thing I would add would be to throw on some sort of bezel to cover the nut- great writeup!

FYI this only applies to the NV3500 transmissions. NV4500 transmissions have a removable knob.

Also, in 95 the knobs changed on both to a grey press on setup.

Not sure what Dave meant by that part. If u got a press on shift knob, this mod should work for u.

You don't have to cut it. But u will have the reduced shaft showing bare metal fer a couple a three inches.
