can you help me to find out what my 4 speed manual trans is? vin number info is incomplete when entered on internet pages.

Truck data:
Silverado 1500 work
MY: 1998
Engine: 4.1L TBI in line 6 (was)
Trans: 4 spd manual (unknown data, no casting number)
Diff: Spicer original (presumably 3.45:1 according to badge)
Assembly plant: Ft Wayne IN.
Spd @3,000 RPM in 4th: (approx 70MPH) on 275/60R15s

Looks like models manufactured for mexico lack of information on the VINs data bases. Mexican dealers d not have information on GMT400s.

Please help.

They still used the inline 6 engine in 98? The body the old square body or the US style rounded body?

The 4.1, from my quick(2 minute) google searching, was "only"put in the trucks made in 97-'99 in the Cordoba, Argentina assembly plant.. but never in Ft. Wayne, Indiana...

And the only 4-speed manual trans they put in these trucks, again a quick Google search, seems to be the "SM465"

Thank you for your help friend, few of the information data I have from the truck is precisely the sticker of the manufactuering plant, and the invoice from Chevy dealership. the matter is that this truck was made for the Mexican market. , let me ry to get some pics of the tranny.

Best Regards.

Incredibly yes my friend. Chevrolet sold the Custom C-1500 with inline 6 engine and a 4 speed manual until 1998 model year. Finally in 1999 they migrated to the 4.3L V6 with 5 speed manual transmission for the base models for the GMT-800 platform. and that is the truck I have, old 4.1 is in the dumpyard already, as I got a carbureted 7.4 on it, but it is too short geared on 4 speed and 3.45:1 original spicer non-positive rearend.

Best Regards.

You think a 454 with a 4 speed and 3.45's is bad, you haven't seen our old '88 C3500. It had 4.11's out back with the same transmission you have. 60mph was ~3000 rpm. Plus that trans shifted awful, I hated it.

Lol Bro, I get you, the deal here is that tranny is superb with 3.45 for drag racing or towing I had hauled in its bed 0.25 Cu meters of gravel and 0.25 Cu meters of sand plus 4 portland cement bags (50kg each) in it and she laughed at that, felt like nothing though old tires and already blown shocks did not like it LOL will post pics like that later. I want to have a 5th gear just to cruise better on the highway, I do 60MPH @ 2,500 rpm now in 4th.

Regards.

I want to see these pictures. I would honestly keep or replace the engine with w V6 and NV3500 MG5. He might have the Muncie SM465. My 1993 truck came from the Ft. Wayne plant with a 5.7L 350 CID TBI NV3500 MG5 3.08 gears in a ten bolt. Now your gear ratio is weird. I did not know that GM built those ratios.

Send pics of this truck! I'm curious to see details on the Mexican GMT400 since lack of info online is non-existent.

Also, did they build the Topkick truck with the GMT400 cab all the way to 2008 like Wikipedia says? And do you know what engines those later model trucks got?

Thanks in advance :)

How is that trans good for drag racing? It shifts like turds, long throw and long wait times for the syncros lol. Wouldn't the M21 be better? It is a robust trans, well suited for work and I liked low range for curb hopping an such. I miss that truck but couldn't stand the lack of OD and no one wanted to let an NV4500 go for less than $800 where and when I could find one.
