I usually don't keep any tools in my truck, used to but took them out years ago to organize everything. It's been years and haven't got around to putting them back. But I think you can't have enough so bring all you can cram in it. You'll need the one you didn't bring.
The 8.1L is basically a BBC. It's the last generation. All bolts are metric and not much interchanges. The heads are completely different. The last year or two of the C3500HD could have them actually.
I know this is old but I've read the thread years ago and now I have a question. If we can run LS ignition on these engines, can we run LS throttle bodies and injectors? I've been reading up on LS engines running Super Victors with 4150 sized throttle bodies and how great it is. You can get 4150...
I like the ST the most, or maybe the Indy trucks. Not sure if anyone posted it already or not, I noticed on the first page you didn't know what an ST was, but it is the GMC version of a Sport. The Sierra ST was replaced buy the not as good looking Sierra GT.
I didn't read through the whole thread but what are you doing for rods? I like the 4.3L, been driving mine for nearly 10 years now but it has a severe flaw. Everyone knows its based off of the 350. But that also means its bank degree isn't the best for a V6. Originally the engine family was odd...
My truck is an SL so it never had a banner. I have an SLT tailgate with the GMC banner. Good to know I can get it off and put it on my current tailgate. What to use to reattach it, panel bond? Mine has some dents so I was thinking of painting it to match my bottom color.
I know you've already painted your grille, but I suggest the newer sealed beam grille painted to match. They look much better. I like the kind of mirrors you have, that's the kind I have, but they look very out of place with those big rims. And what about a pin stripe at the upper body line to...
I've always read those Edelbrock cams are outdated. Regardless with a cam change you will at the least need a chip burnt. Have you done the basic TBI modifications already?
The GMT400 3500HD only came out of the the factory as 2wd but some conversion companies made some 4wd. Another note, these trucks are nothing like the 800 and 900 platform 3500HD. The GMT400 3500HD is comparable to an F550.
Finding one with an 8.1L for parts won't be easy either. I'd look for...
I looked into the swap myself but it's pointless really. I thought it'd be a good swap and it'd be different. But the 8.1L is really just a bigger version of the 454. The heads are supposed to be better and everything uses metric bolts. In what world are you living in that an 8.1L is easier to...
Most of the parts sold at parts stores are the same part, some things are different though.
The hose is probably part of your problem. That doesn't mean parts don't wear out premature. I've changed both calipers twice on my truck, the alternator twice, and the starter 3 times and it needs done...
We had to formula supplement with my first kid so I kept a few containers.. Once I get things straightened out I'm just going to have a container for bolts, one for nuts, one for screws, and one for nails. I'm keeping them on a shelf.
I wanted to lift mine. My plan was to use 4 inch spndles, taller coils, and a shackle flip. Run flared fiberglass fenders up front and body color factory fender flares on the back. Go with AR Baja rims and had finally decided on 33x12.50s. It would be a good setup but my truck is too useful the...
If you want high revving and a torque engine then you're going to have to make a compromise of some sort. A big inch small block seems to fit the bill. If you can grab a good 400 block that would be a good option.
Thanks for the advice. I've never heard of that but what's ever I run won't be...
Why not a big Cadillac, 472 or 500?
I've considered about every possible engine out there for my truck. I'm still running the original engine though. I'm torn between a 4.3L, 4.2L, 292, and a 6.0L. I wanted to go with a big block but it's just not for my truck. The idea of a GMC V6 seemed cool...
Because I don't want this thread to die I'm digging it up.
In my car, unfortunently not my truck, I took on a Mustang. I was merging onto a 4 lane highway and the mustang tried passing me on the on ramp while I was merging. I floor it in hopes of getting away from him since he was tailgating me...
Since the thread is dug up we might as well use it.
Mine is just now around 227,000 miles I think. I drive it once or twice a week now. I now use Brad Penn oil because it's cheaper and a cheaper grade Baldwin filter.
You can tell you are on a GM forum when people consider 300,000 being...
Johnson Controls makes them, along with a bunch of other brands. Interstate is one of them if I recall, and if the rumor is true they make Autocraft/Carquest batteries. Read the labels on batteries, if they are marked you'll see everything from USA to Saidi Arabia. There's another brand Johnson...
The throttle body work is very simple. Me and my buddy did mine. I took it apart and he did the grinding while I worked on the truck. He has no mechanical experience really, was half drunk, and used a 4 1/2 inch grinder. I used a cartridge roll on a dremel to smooth it out. If you have the...
If you keep the injection setup on the newer motor you'll need all of the electronics from that truck. The simplest solution is get an Edelbrock intake for '96+ heads and use a TBI adapter. You're going to need a chip made up for it.
