Intake Manifold - TV Cable bracket

I think I screwed up my intake gasket install. Is the TV cable bracket mounted directly to the intake using the intake bolts at the rear? I had them as studs when I took them out, forgot to take a pic but I couldn’t find nuts for these two studs and realized the bracket doesn’t really fit on...

    TBI MPG and other observations.

Wanted to update this if someone has the same issue. My temp fix was zip ties, but I had the distributor out for an intake gasket replacement. I repaired my distributor today. Stock screws are 6-32. Drilled out with a #29 bit and tapped for 8-32. Used Phillips head machine screws with lock...

Help ID 2 engine parts: 1999 GMC Suburban

The one on the passenger side is GM’s awful quick connect for the heater hose. I’d replace it with a 5/8 nipple with 1/2 NPT thread. That’s what I’m doing with mine. Snap it off and get a Lisle 62200 to get the nub out.

    TBI to aftermarket EFI

I’ve kicked around the idea of a Holley Sniper on an L31 crate engine. Doing it myself it would be about the same cost as a custom TBI setup. It seems to me it should be a simple install with a new intake, fuel pump, and adapting the stock fuel lines to the Sniper. Then again TBI is dirt simple...

    Intake bolts for TBI

I don’t think I’d even need the spacer if I used a stud. Is this something that can get at a hardware store?

    Intake bolts for TBI

Anyone know if the OEM type bolts and studs are available for the TBI intake? Snapped a stud at the front driver side and it’s one that the alternator is braced off.

    Coolant in oil

I’m going to dive into it here in a week. I’ll probably just do a compression test and end up pulling the intake. Already have the gaskets at least.

    RedHead Steeering Gears.....

I went with Red Head, 1500 miles later and very happy. Truck drives great.

The above is accurate for my 88.

    O2 sensor Question

Agreed though it’s pretty easy to determine if the code 43 is the knock sensor VS a problem with the ESC. Does it knock or ping before the light comes on? If so that’s the ECM doing a self check for the knock sensor and if it’s reaching the point you notice it then there is an issue with the...

    Coolant in oil

I forgot I replaced my spark plugs a while ago. These had at least 60k on them if not more. I wonder if the intake could be leaking into the lift valley? I know my intake is leaking a smidge on the front of the motor, it’s wet but not dripping.

    O2 sensor Question

I would think the code 32 is the reason why it’s running like crap. A stuck EGR is going to continuously pump exhaust into the intake tract. If you used anything but an AC Delco EGR valve there is your problem.

    O2 sensor Question

Knock sensor wire is easily damaged by retards replacing starters. Mine was snapped in three places by the previous owner. I ended up running a new wire. Easy way to check it is with a multimeter. If you get infinite resistance between the knock sensor connector and ESC connector then your...

    Coolant in oil

I wanted to get an idea of the health of the engine, it’s only averaged 5k a year for the last 20 years. Everything else in the oil is average except for the potassium and sodium levels. The engine has not been overheated since I bought the truck last year, though I’ve only put 5000 miles on...

    Coolant in oil

I’ve never done head gaskets before. Do the heads need machining generally?

    Coolant in oil

TBI L05 with 115k on it. Sent an oil sample into Blackstone and there is coolant in the oil. It’s not enough to be visible to the naked eye and I’m not noticeably losing coolant. Is there a chance this is just intake gaskets or should I be planning head gaskets?

I checked my steering gear - it’s about the same with the engine on or off, no extra play either way.

    TBI MPG and other observations.

My ESC is external, and the only reason I know this is I had to run a new knock sensor wire from the ESC to the sensor.

    TBI MPG and other observations.

Managed 13.6 MPG on this last tank, ended up making a couple trips to town and one trip into the mountains in addition to 150 highway miles. Definitely a big improvement over the 11.5 MPG I was getting on similar driving. I suspect straight interstate driving is 16-17 now. I may just tap the...

    10 Bolt to 14 Bolt

No oil coming out of the fill plug doesn’t really mean anything, either add oil until it comes out of the plug or pull the cover. If you get a loud metallic clank shifting from drive to reverse you have a bad u joint or 3. U joints are easy.

    Steering wander

Did you use good components? Are you cranked? My uppers were replaced by the previous owner before I bought the truck. Between the crank and the Autozone crap quality they were shot in 10000 miles.

    Steering wander

Also - I do believe a small amount of play in the gearbox is acceptable. If yours isn’t leaking, returns to center easily, and responds to input from the wheel it’s probably okay. These Saginaw gear boxes are not as awesome as the modern rack and pinion gears, but they aren’t terrible either...
