    1995 5.7 head / head gasket issue.

Leakdown testing of the cylinders, looking for bubbles in the radiator. (And also for leakage past the valves, and assessing leakage past the rings. If the engine is shot, or the valve leak, you'd want to address that before you cram another head gasket in place.) Pressure testing of the...

ECM trouble dtc 51 PROM error

MAYBE merely disconnecting the battery, removing the PROM, (using standard anti-static protocol) re-seating it, and reconnecting the battery will fix the problem.

    Rats... need a new part

I replaced a PCV elbow on my Luminas with an orange-silicone 90 degree spark plug boot. Seen on the front cam cover, left side of photo, near Copyright symbol. Years later, still working well. No promises on a plug boot fitting that application, though.

    350 vortec choppy cam

ABSOLUTELY. You'd be throwing-away low rpm torque. A small-block in a heavy vehicle needs all the torque it can get. The deep first gear of a 4L60E helps some. The bigger problem is getting the computer to deal with the poor cylinder filling at very low RPM. Not recommended for the...

    Slight knock?

Yeah, that's why I "Like" most, but not all of your posts. I'm trying to say that you have a way with words, and you have an affinity for philosophy that I usually agree with. You go beyond actual "mechanics" of how vehicles work, into a discourse of how the world works...or doesn't work...and...

Code 32 with a high flow exhaust.

The '88 TBI/Emissions service manual says the small-block (and V6?) O2 sensors should still be active (allowing closed-loop operation) at idle. The 454 will go to open-loop at idle, though. My own '88 5.7L used to drop out of closed-loop at idle. Just like yours, it was back in closed-loop...

    Cap & Rotor

Near forever, IF the coil doesn't get overloaded/excessive secondary voltage due to failures of the plug wires or some copulating anthropoid deciding that the spark plugs need a gap big enough to push a kitten through. Oh, sure...it's going to fail someday. But there's no expected service life...

    Slight knock?

Thanks for that. An excellent mental picture. The voltmeter on my truck is an example of that. Lately the needle has been randomly going from 10 to 14 volts, even though the voltage at the alternator is a nice, solid 14+. Thousands of years ago, I was early in my career. Sent lots of...

    Slight knock?

You notice that in my previous post, "Rolls-Royce" was in quotation marks. Yes, the Vortec 5.7L core short-block I rebuilt for my '88 K1500 had upper main bearing shells marked .0006. It's been years, but I don't remember the lower shells being undersize...just the uppers. If that's correct...

94 k1500 brake shoe and drum size

I'm pretty sure that when I ripped-out my 8.5" axle in favor of the 9.5" semi-float, that I re-used my existing park brake cables. I'm reasonably certain the cables are the same--they fit the vehicle (wheelbase) not the axle. The last sets of park brake cables I bought came from O'Reillys. I...

    starter bendix gremlin

Doesn't matter if the terminals are loose. Either the starter solenoid works to pull the starter drive into engagement with the ring gear, or it doesn't. If the starter motor spins, the solenoid plunger HAS to be in the position that engages the starter drive. And since this is a "rebuilt"...

    Slight knock?

GM assembles the engines with the option of using bearing shells in half-a-thou increments. For example, you might get a standard bearing shell on the cap, and a half-a-thou undersize bearing on the saddle. This gives GM the ability to keep oil clearance accurate to within a quarter-thou of...

94 k1500 brake shoe and drum size

You could measure the grooves to see if the drum is beyond it's machining diameter...but...I'm with Caman96. It's almost certainly "done". Might as well get two. Ideally, from a local source. Lotsa folks complaining that their mail-order drums are warped, and then it's a hassle to return...

    No Brakes!!! Dangerous ride home.

I had a '66 Biscayne as my first (hand-me-down) car. Mom bought it new, I got it ten years later. Needed a master cylinder. Pedal sometimes went to the floor. Dangerous as hell, but what does a high-school kid care? I wanted more horsepower. Which, of course, led to the engine exploding...

    Confirmed brake bleeding scan tools

Iron-body RWAL has it's own dedicated bleeder screw. '87 (Squarebody), '88--'90(?) Aluminum-body RWAL does not have a bleeder screw, needs scan tool. '91--'94(?) EBC4, mostly used on Suburbans and perhaps other SUVs. I don't think it was ever used on pickups. '92--'94. EBC310 All GMT400 C/K...

94 k1500 brake shoe and drum size

Caliper is cantilevered off of the mounting pins/sleeves. Those pins were never intended to take braking thrust. An abuse of the mounting pins, potentially leading to metal fatigue and failure. GM designed those calipers so that braking thrust was taken directly by the iron mounting bracket...

    Confirmed brake bleeding scan tools

Snap-On Solus Pro 14.2 software bleeds '97 K2500 EBC310 ABS. Therefore, probably all the EBC310-based systems. Haven't tested it on aluminum-body RWAL or EBC4 systems. Solus Pro 8.2, and MT/MTG2500 6.2 does NOT work on '97 K2500 EBC310.

Performance Issue on 1993 C1500 1/2 Pickup Single Cab

    1. How old are all the usual tune-up parts and procedures? Distributor cap, rotor, plug wires, spark plugs? Have you verified the initial timing, electronic spark advance, EGR, PCV, EVAP, and heated-air intake systems? How old is the O2 sensor? 2. What is the fuel pressure at prime, and...

Best way to add power to my 98 gmc sierra k1500 with 4.3 vortec

Sure. Yup. Easier than a 4L80E--no controller needed. Naw. A 9.5" semi-float is stronger than both of them. The downside is the rather poor selection of gear ratios. Of course, the 9" Ford is a poor-man's quick-change, and has every gear ratio imaginable. OTOH, bolts right in if you get...
