1999 L31 Engine with nearly 260k, Timing chain plus what else?

My 1999 C1500 Sub runs great (well, for now lol) and is approaching 260 miles. L31 Vortec 5.7. Cylinder heads, new mpfi injectors, and lifters replaced a couple years ago. No knocking, oil kept changed, and I drive it hard, maybe 5k miles per year. Trans fluid swapped annually (pan drop, I have...

Odd stumble at highway speed, or wind turbulence?

Gents, after chasing this odd problem and scratching my head for months I finally seemed to have gotten rid of it. I changed my cam retard from -1.85 to +2.9 and the stumble is gone. I'm reading the cam retard with an app and Bluetooth obd. I tried this on a whim after reading other posts of...

Why do the TBI trucks have so much valve rattle?

So I've owned 2 1990 half tons (4.3 and 5.7) and a 93 S10. The S10 was only 4 years old when I got it with 25k miles. The 1990 4.3 was 8 years old with about 90k, and the 1990 5.7 was a solid 25 years old well over 200k. They all had valve rattle when accelerating "lightly to moderately". No...

    C1500 Suburban Master Cylinder questions

I've put about 50 miles on it so far since having it towed home and no malfunction. Today I'm putting it on Jacks and looking around. I'll check especially for damaged wheel sensor.

    C1500 Suburban Master Cylinder questions

Well we got it home, it's driving with no other symptoms. So whatever it is it's intermittent. Pedal is firm. Firmer than most gmt400 vehicles honestly

    C1500 Suburban Master Cylinder questions

So yesterday my wife got stranded because the 99 Suburban C1500 broke down. Symptoms are a sudden ABS light on the dash (ABS functioned properly with no light prior to this). Also, the truck wouldn't accelerate. Engine RPM increased but very sluggish acceleration. Truck only just now arrived...

First and Last Bluetop Steering Gear

I agree. I'm not suggesting people do it. But using the ATF got me home, I flushed it the next day. Fluid still looks pink but after several years, no leaks thankfully.

First and Last Bluetop Steering Gear

I doubt it will be an issue. I put Max life trans fluid in my Honda Odyssey ps pump because it blew a fitting and I just happened to have bought a gallon of Max Life that morning I used almost the whole gallon to get home. Fixed the leak, purged the system with a couple quarts of Honda fluid...

    Steering gearbox replacement/rebuild

Well, after reading what GeorgiaMtnClimber just said, I probably will.

    Steering gearbox replacement/rebuild

I'm tempted to spend the money on a Redhead quick ratio box. That's a lot of cash but apparently it really helps regain the feel of the road. My wife drives this old Sub and honestly it's a tricky beast to drive even for me. I may decide to rebuild the box but not sure if the gears are worn...

2-3 shift slip, 4l60e, does Corvette servo help?

It's a fairly light 16ft bass boat with a 70hp 2 stroke. Since I drive the truck more cautiously when towing, the trans is probably safer towing that dealing with my lead foot when not towing

2-3 shift slip, 4l60e, does Corvette servo help?

Just an update. This old transmission still kicking. I boosted the line pressure with a handheld tuner and the 2-3 flare went away. I've towed popup campers and bass boats, gone from West Virginia to Marathon Key Florida on that transmission.

    How do these gears look?

Ok gents, here's a 10 bolt that I rebuilt in December 2016, 45k miles ago. Serviced it today (not the first oil swap its had). Gears are Motive gear 4.10 with an Eaton Trutrac. No regrets on either purchase. The truck drives fine. The rear end has a minor "hooooooooo" sound from 50-60 but...

    Steering gearbox replacement/rebuild

I have a ton of play in my steering gearbox and it's not the rag joint. I put in a new rag joint a while back but you can definitely still see play in the gearbox. After I did the ball joints a couple years ago the shop had some difficulty aligning it because of the shop in the gearbox. Also...

Odd stumble at highway speed, or wind turbulence?

Kinda. My gold membership will tow it up to 100 miles to whatever certified AAA location I want. It will at least get the truck to a somewhat secure location. Glad the cats on these Vortecs are so strange that they're rarely stolen

Odd stumble at highway speed, or wind turbulence?

Ok, got my hands on a code reader, misfire #6, was a faulty plug wire (burn through near the manifold). White hazy spot on the outside where it was cracked. So, I haven't gotten it on the highway yet but I feel confident this was the cause of the odd stumble. Either way a cracked plug wire...

Odd stumble at highway speed, or wind turbulence?

Well crud, yesterday I noticed a rumbling sound coming from the rear when I let off the gas. I suspect some tomfoolery in the rear end, which is potentially courtesy of yours truly since I rebuilt the rear end myself a few years ago (first rebuild ever). Assuming she doesn't break down on the...

Interesting suggestion. Any idea on how to test that?

Odd stumble at highway speed, or wind turbulence?

Yeah actually I do a lot of N/S driving at highway speeds when I'm in the Sub. It just feels different, I've put a lot of miles on this truck in 8 years and never felt it quite like this. I'll pull codes tomorrow if the local parts store will give me a loaner scanner.

Odd stumble at highway speed, or wind turbulence?

Ok gents this is a head scratcher for me. I'll put my Suburban specific info below. I cannot tell if my Sub has developed a stumble at highway speeds or if for some reason wind turbulence feels different/more noticeable. This is only felt at about 65+ cruising and feels very much like a...

5.7 Vortec won't crank cold, exhaust smells rich

This indeed was the case. The FPR was an OEM that came installed on the OEM MPFI injectors so I'm disappointed that it failed in just a few short years. I saw no obvious signs of leaking inside the intake but the truck sat untouched for a few weeks anyhow. I also found the O-ring around the...

5.7 Vortec won't crank cold, exhaust smells rich

Today I checked and it held 50psi for 4 hours. It bleeds to 0 overnight. After 4 hours it stumbled a little upon cranking but not really hard to start. What's normal? Should it be bleeding to 0 psi overnight?

5.7 Vortec won't crank cold, exhaust smells rich

For what it's worth, the Fuel Pressure Regulator has to be somewhat recent. When I installed the new MPFI injectors a couple years ago it should have come with a new FPR. Well since I've noticed it smelling kinda like it's running rich, maybe the FPR is malfunctioning. It's not throwing...

5.7 Vortec won't crank cold, exhaust smells rich

Hmm. I hadn't thought about the fuel leaking INTO the intake via the regulator and flooding it. I was thinking maybe the fuel was draining back into the gas tank and it had a lot of air in the fuel line to burp out. Thank you for that tip. So, yes the fuel pressure drops a little after turning...

5.7 Vortec won't crank cold, exhaust smells rich

Yes, obviously I posted this too close to bedtime last night. I just realized how vague my post was so I edited it. Engine cranks over, but seems to get no combustion until 10-20 seconds of cranking. Then it spits, misfires, and knocks for a brief while, then suddenly runs perfectly. Engine...
