    I'd also check Vacum lines. Something as simple as this has caused me issues in the past, but mine was at take off underload. Check the pcv valve and hose if it has one ( im not sure if the vortecs do or not). Could it be egr?

    Thanks man, I invested in a power probe and Volt meter, as well as a subscription to Alldata DIY for the diagrams like you said. Those things are well worth the money and I am much more confident in dealing with electrical stuff now. But hopefully I have all the boogers solved in this truck now.

    Well, I honestly should have referenced back to this thread when I started trying to fix the issue 4 years later. You all were correct in diagnosing the problem as some janked up wiring in the head unit. I feel like a DA. But the problem is fixed! I forgot all the helpful suggestions yall made...

    It looks like the connection that goes into the switch that is in the left top corner of the picture. It screws into the accumulator. From what I've heard they are prone to failure after a few years. Hell who kno ws, you may be able to plug it back in and have a functioning AC.
