Most likely the intake is leaking--the TBI's and 1st Gen Vortecs are notorious for it. And often when you shutdown and get out of the truck is when you'll smell it.

Usually the leak is in one of the rear corners of the intake. Sometimes it leaks to the outside, sometimes to the inside. Check your oil for coolant. It may not be leaking enough to show up in the oil, but it ain't good for the motor.........
thanks... I'm going start watching it more closely, but the problem is I don't put a lot of miles on it... since it's not overheating I may have to take a short road trip and see if it shows more...

Have you done a radiator pressure test with a pressure tester. If there is a leak, this will make it show. Don't have one ? autozone will rent you one for free. You have to buy it, but will get a full refund when you bring it back. They will take your debit card.

Yes, it's been pressure tested twice with no leak showing up yet...

Did the pressure bleed off after a few mins? How much pressure was it pumped up to? If the leak is that small. have you thought about using some cooling system stop leak. Alumaseal is the best stop leak there is, just FYI

I took it to the shop both times, the first time I watched but didn't look at the gauge but he left it pressurized for awhile and the second time I didn't watch but both times no leak was found. As for the Alumseal i'm going to hold off on that because I want to find out whats going on, this problem really has me curious... I did use Alumseal on a Mustang radiator leak I had years ago when I was low on funds and it worked. thanks for your input...

I had this problem on my '96 C1500. Could not determine where the small leak was, but could smell coolant.
It was the reservoir tube where it connected underneath the coolant reservoir. found it would drip and run onto the frame of the truck and wouldn't reach the ground. Leak would stop after while when parked.

Please don't add any type of "seal" junk into the system, you'll just regret it sooner or later.

When you're doing the pressure test, are you doing it after the engine has cooled down enough to safely remove the cap? If so, it may be that the leak only "opens up" when the engine is hot. Not directly suggesting you do a pressure test on a hot engine as there are obvious risks involved there, but just wondering..

I'll take a look there... thanks

Sounds kind of like when my intake was leaking. Didn't know what it was until it started to pool up. Would lose coolant ever so slightly until it got worse and I resealed it.

Also did you check the water pump real well? My weep hole leaked really iffy for a while like that.

Another thing to consider since it's not showing any leaks during the pressure test would be the radiator cap. I swear I saw something about this posted here recently. Same situation, no leaks under pressure during the test but would leak a little while driving. He replaced the cap and the leak disappeared.
