I have a 1994 Yukon. The cab mount bolt just behind the driver's side seat broke and I'm unable to access it properly from underneath.

I've been told that there is an inspection plate underneath the carpet and I can access the bolt from the top.

Before I begin to disassemble things, I want to double check to make sure there is an access from the top. I don't want to have to cut into the floor pan.

If anyone has had the carpet out in one of these SUVs and knows first hand, let me know.

I've stripped down many 400 interiors. Never seen an inspection plate or any other type of access through the floor.

Another user posted this picture showing where he had taken the inspection covers off to lift his truck cab off of it's frame.

It's a round cover attached to the floor with sealant. I'm just not sure if the same applies to a 94 Yukon. It should be the same but I was hoping for a second opinion to confirm.

The bolt had to get in there somehow.
Bolt comes from underneath. However, the nut welded inside that cavity had to get in there somehow!

@sewlow - the plate is flushed out pretty well with seam sealer, so they're easy to overlook.

Dunno if I've ever noticed one for any other spot but those front bolts, but it's probably safe to assume others are there, if there's no other access point.

Here's a better view of the covers in place, you can see 'em pretty easy in this one

Hi Richard,

Thanks again for the pictures and info. I was finally going to take out my seats and pull back the carpet this weekend but I figured I'd ask one more time just to make sure it's the same on a SUV as it is a truck cab.

Okay, so I took some of the interior apart today and accessed that inspection plate. I cut the glue around it, popped it off and tried an easy-out from the top of the bolt after oiling it down really good. Bolt fractured so I drilled all the way through it, slowly going up in size. Then when I was nearing the nut, I crushed it with vice grips and turned it out. Luckily, I was able to save the threads on the nut.

So I have one side step on. Wish me luck on the other side.

Glad to hear you found those access plates on the SUV body. I suspected they had to be there, unless somehow the factory had made a different access point to weld the nuts in which didn't make a lot of sense to me it would be done that way.

Yeah, I was able to finally get those steps on thanks to your picture and suggestion Richard. I took out the driver side seat, rear seat bottom legs, sill plate, seat belt assembly and rear side panel. That finally gave me enough room to peel back the carpet to work. I put the inspection plate back in with silicone caulking.

The other 2 bolts came out this morning. I spent over an hour slowly backing them in and out as to make sure they wouldn't break.

Can't believe installing these steps turned into a 10 hour job, but it's done right and the women in my family are much happier to ride in it without having to climb inside.

I'll be a little tempted to cut the carpet if this happens in the future. I just couldn't with this truck since the carpet is brand new in it.
