I have no place close to me to do black bare, so its a mail off for me. Thats why I said, do everything before the tune. If this is a driver, you don't want to wait around while they have your ECM.

Yeah, this is my daily driver. I'll do what I can and maybe get my old ranger(boo) running for a bit before going for a tune so I can still commute.

Yet another thing that Black Bear Performance can help you with. They can deactivate the EGR in the computer, which is essential if you want to delete it with no ill effects.

I was just reading about the EGR delete. I think that's a good option for me. The truck has 388877km on it so 241k miles? High mileage.

This is why I mentioned the $60 deposit for a spare PCM that's included in the price of the tune... It doesn't work that way. You pay the $305 for the mail order tune, they send you a tuned PCM. When you receive and install the tuned PCM, you have the option of sending your stock one in for a refund of $60 or keeping it. There is no down time for the truck.

Personally I'd leave the EGR alone, I don't feel that there'd be a very significant gain. I know there are some here who hate it, though.

The thing about the delete is that you are putting hot exhaust gas back into the intake. Cold are makes more power. I f you live where it is cold a lot, then maybe its no big deal. For me, its hot here most of the time. The more cold air I can get into the engine, the better. IMO, more power is better, but not everyone feels like I do. Thats why Toyota sales so many fuel efficent cars.

all these are good responses. i put an aftermarket CAI and it did nothing as i thought it would but i did it just for the eye candy. (I take my truck to shows). the electric fan is a great start.

I'm excited to do the mpfi injectors but a little intimidated to dig in there and rip apart my engine.

I just bought a ‘98 Z71 and had to replace the blown out intake gasket. I too was timid about doing this repair but it’s actually straight forward and easy to do. If you can turn a wrench then you can do this job.

I wish I had the extra funds to do the mpfi injectors while I had the intake off and wasn’t in a pinch to get the truck running. After having the upper intake manifold off I see how easy it is to do so I do not mind waiting.

I too have have “high” mileage(255,520) and was debating on the EGR delete as well but for all intents and purposes it’s helps with gas mileage.

There was a thread I read last week about the effects of a CAI and had actual numbers showing they don’t actually help unless it’s fully sealed. One member actually took the lid of his stock box and read the number and showed for every 8° increase it equates to 1-2% power loss.

Since you have a cat back exhaust maybe leave that alone for now and get a black bear tune. Since they have free adjustments wouldn’t hurt to wait to redo the exhaust to longtubes and go true dual.

Just my .02

What ive done is modified the stock K47 box. Its dual layered so I cut out the inner layer (leaving enough to support the filter) and drilled a 4" hole in the front corner and put a tube up to the rad. support and drilled a matching hole so it breathes from behind grill.

The EGR should only be opening during cruising and idle. It should not affect acceleration or power. But will increase fuel economy.
