I've been looking around but can't find an answer. What's the biggest tire that will fit in the spare tire space underneath the bed? I plan on running 285/70r17s on the truck. Will that fit up under there? What about a 285/75r16?

Sub'd for an answer because I'm too lazy to try hoisting one of my 285s on the truck in there to see.

Anybody know the answer? I don't wanna waste my money on an extra tire if it ain't gonna fit.

I’m pretty sure a 265 is the biggest that will fit. If I remember correctly, there wasn’t much more room when I lowered my spare last summer. The NBS trucks can fit a 285 from what I’ve heard though.

What exactly would prevent it from fitting? What would it hit?

If you've got a hitch, the 285 will most likely not fit, my 265 touches my hitch when all the way up. 285/75 r16 and 285/70 r17 are basically the same tire, just bigger rim opening, so probably not on either one. :)

I will be interested if any more info on this turns up. One of my next projects is getting the spare out of the bed (and from under the toolbox) and back where it belongs. I really don't want the spare as thief bait every time I park somewhere.

One thing about all this... it is a SPARE... its job is to get you home in case of a failure so it could be a smaller tire that would fit under the bed. The only downside to having it be a smaller size is that it prevents using it in a normal tire rotation and thus exercising the spare tire winch when the tires are rotated. Like every other mechanical device the spare lift needs to be occasionally maintained.

Haha. I was just thinking. I have the g80 in the rear. So I don't think two different size tires back there would work out well . Would have to swap tires so the spare would be on the front
