Is it relatively normal for there to be small amounts of black residue on the dipstick? Fluid is nice and pink, I changed it and the filter in the last 10k miles, there was a pretty normal amount of residue in the pan, 91 700r4 with 120,000 miles, no shift problems, except weird 1-2 shift only when cold.

Trust me, if the 700R4 is anything like the 4L60E, be prepared for a failure. Pretty much the only thing out of the ordinary that I noticed when my built 60E gave up the ghost at a little over 10K miles in.

is there anything you can really do about it? It was weird that when I pulled the pan, there was a pretty small amount of clutch material in the bottom of the pan.

It didn't really slip, it wants to shift, cut out for a fraction of a second, then it shifts. It's a relatively firm shift, so i was leaning towards the spring being broken, or on it's way out. But when it's warmed up, it shifts great.

My truck shifts hard from 1st to 2nd if i manually shift through the gears. Or start in 2nd gear. If it's in drive it shifts normal.

Not to my knowledge. I've blown up two 60Es in my V6 truck, which is why it's getting a 4L80E swapped in.
This makes me think it's the luck of the draw and depends on how we drive. It also depends if you're engine is putting out a good torque number for what it is. My Automotive teacher is an ASE certified master Tech, he worked at GM dealerships on trucks like ours and he said "All those Transmissions seem to have a little differences between all of them even though they were the same. They would shift different, feel different and go out at different times." He also said "700 R4 was the worst for being rebuilt being put back in and then having to take it back out because it wouldn't shift right." This has prompt me to buy a good used trans so if mine takes a :poop: I just drop and replace.

I'm still unsure about my shifting problem. If go light to half throttle, it's good, and smooth. Anything over half throttle, it doesn't slip. It just kinda jumps? Maybe transmission mount?
