Put a new AC Delco pump in and it cleared up my hard start issue for maybe a month. Now on cold mornings it starts as soon as you hit the key, but after it warms up or sits in the sun all day it spins for 6 to 8 seconds before starting. Also now getting a super strong gas smell out of the exhast and rough idle after getting to operating temperature. It has new fuEl pump, filter, mpi injectors and coolant temp switch.

Mine does the opposite starts great when warm but on cold days the cranking time is extended but above about 50 degrees it starts fine in the morning and everything in the fuel system is new except for the flex able portion of the flue lines.

I just solved my issue that was close to yours and exactly like GreenZ98's. I swapped in a Delphi MPFI unit and as long as it had been sitting for a while, like first thing in the morning, it would fire right up. If it only sat for a few hours then it would take 5 or 6 seconds to fire up. I chased this issue for a long time. All other culprits checked out. It ended up being the ground on the thermostat housing. I should have noticed it needed some TLC when I was doing the MPFI swapped but I missed it. Restripped the wire, put a good connector on it and threw it back in. Problem solved. I hope that helps.

Thanks for the reply that's one thing I would've never given a second look. As soon as it gets a little warmer today I'm gonna start fooling with it and that will be the first place I look.

Nevermind, I'm back troubleshooting this hard start again. Behaved as if that ground repair fixed it, then started acting up again.

Looks like a new fuel pump so far has done the trick for me. My old pump passed the leak down test and pressure tests, but it was the last thing I could think that could cause my starting problem. I went to AutoZone and got a Delphi FG0086 for $185 bucks and put it in and so far so good. Idk what brand the old pump is but it's the old style 3 post with external strainer. This new pump is so much quieter and she fires as soon as I bump the key no matter if it's been running, sitting overnight, sitting for a couple hours. If anything changes I'll let y'all know but so far, so good.
