Hey guys anyone ever use Hughes Transmissions? Good or Bad?

I see a lot of good reviews and looking to get their XD25-1 (Goes for about 3-4k online but since they are down the street from me they said it cost me about 2k (Wtf is the write up) )kit so I can tow with my mind at ease. My Neighbor has their 4l60e and his only complaint is the hard shifts (wimp). Other than that he said he was surprised to hear when they called him on completion that they custom make every Torque converter to match the engine (I thought that was kinda neat).

Or should I be fine towing right next to the limit of truck with the stock setup? I've done everything else to get up to par (Suspension and bushings/brakes also went through inspection at MVD/DMV at which they gave me 12k tags after the inspection..) So my scare and due to research it shows the transmission was our weak point on these trucks when it came to weight ratings... So I wanted make sure when I tow my fiver it would blow up right out the dealer lot (LOL) or am I being a little too worried?

Here's the long description on the kit:

Extreme Truck/SUV 2WD Trans Pkg Designed for Extreme Towing/ RV Vehicles. SPECIFY GAS or DEISEL Engine. Call for Further Details. Incl: 25-1, 25LXTM-HD or 25LXFM-HD, HP8255 Trans Cooler w/Fan, Deep Alum. Oil Pan, (3) Cases Lucas Sure-Shift.

Just to add, transmission is fine has 114k miles and just want ease of mind. Side note got a tune from Black Bear Performance and what a difference their tunes really do help shifts and everything else.

Personally, I would keep what you have. Good transmission tuning can go a long way to make them survive. Also, making sure the transmission temps stay within check and it is serviced regularly.

I'm still running the original transmission in my truck at 240k miles (50k of that being with the 489 I have). It was a dedicated tow rig up until the 190k mile mark.

Although I'm probably the biggest 4L60E basher on these forums... I agree. Run what you have for now. No sense fixing what isn't broken. Just don't do what I did and rebuild the 4L60E if/when it goes out... Go straight to a 4L80E if that happens.

I agree with @df2x4 and @Christain Steffen, just keep what you have, and also like what @df2x4 said, don't rebuild the 60, get an 80, that's what I am going to do when my 60 dies.

^ I should Clarify I have an 4l80e. My neighbor has a 60e built by them but I would be buying the 80e as 60 would be a really bad downgrade lol.

I understand what you guys are saying. I'll keep it the way it is for now and til it blows. Just wanted more assurance as I'll be right at my tow limit if not on it with this new 5er.

Guess I'll go get a temp gauge for the tranny. Any recommendations on Pillar pods? They all got super mixed reviews. I was thinking glowshift cause they're cheap.

Also do you guys tap into the line for the gauge sensor or the test port?

My dually has 130k and lived for 80k with a Whipple and a 2500# welding bed on its back. Shift kit, tuning, and sprag are about all it takes to make these near bombproof.

I didn't realize you already had an 80E. You're fine! Stock 80Es will take quite a beating.

You might look into figuring out a trans temp gauge via Bluetooth to your cell phone, unless you just want a gauge available all the time without the use of your phone. Not sure about Apple products but Torque works great with Android stuff.

Off topic question here, but what specifically would you say the Black Bear Tune changed? I've got a 7.4 in my Suburban and have been thinking of getting a tune, but not sure if it's worth it. I don't tow, but I do enjoy driving the truck and would like some extra oomph, if you will.

I will look into that!

It changed everything to be honest. Shift points are great nice and firm. I had them turn torque management completely off. Truck acted like it had a breath of fresh air. Better gas mileage when nice drive but will be honest does get worse (for me at least) when I smash the gas.
