I did a bit of research about used trucks... Between '04 to 2012. Too many factory defects / problem engineering screw-ups in engines / transmissions. In Dodge, Chevy, Ford, ( especially that Triton V8), Nissan, etc. And the high cost of parts & repairs!!!!

My '88 Sierra SLE C2500 is a Camper Package. With 396,000 miles, it runs like new. I do have 145,000 on the replaced 350cid, 4-bolt main, and an Art Carr heavy duty RV transmission.

Last week I completely replaced the front suspension / steering w/ Moog. Interior re-done as original, new Michelin tires, ..etc,...etc....

No rust... the truck needs an original re-paint. I will NEVER buy a new truck. Mine is "like" new.... and cheap to repair & actually fun to work on.

In my area they are going up because you can actually work on them. All these trucks that are like 2008 and newer seem to be glitchier and ridiculous to try to maintain yourself.

I now have 2 1999 Subs and I'm going to keep them until someone totals them. Which is unfortunately too easy encounter in my area.

The trend in my area was always some redneck with new tires decent paint and 250K+ trying to squeeze $7500 out of his and the more genuine gentlemen were looking for 4K or 5K for a strong, middle mileage good solid condition truck. But the last two or three times I’ve looked, which could just be purely coincidence, I haven’t seen a nice daily driver under $5000

Unfortunately up here in Canada, these trucks fall apart due to rust. Most of them I see are dirt cheap (sub $2000 CAD) and need extensive repair or restore, or are ridiculously expensive (above $7500 CAD) and are near perfect. I paid $2200 for my truck and spent $2450 on it a week later to get it through our yearly inspection and onto the road. I'm now $10k+ in parts and labor and have no intention to ever sell the truck. The laundry list for it grows too.

If I had to guess, I'd be able to get $4000 for mine without even trying. The last one I had sold at $3500 in a few hours and it wasn't as nice of shape.

It's crazy how much the prices for these trucks fluctuate between different parts of US/Canada. I paid $1200 for my truck last spring. Here in Ohio they are usually all rusted out, mine included, but the frame is good. Just rusty spots on the body in all the typical areas. The truck only had 78k miles when I got it and only needed tires, everything else on the truck was fine. $1200 for a running, driving, 350 stick shift 4x4 half ton pickup with under 80k miles? You can't beat that.

The problem here is that they are super strict on everything that has to do with inspection. It's a safety thing and without a valid inspection sticker and proper paperwork you can't even renew your registration. Some parts of it are especially bull; you can have no exhaust (just headers) and be legal as long as it's not leaking, but if you have a full system, with cats, muffler, resonator, etc and a small leak you have to have the leak fixed. If there's pipe there it can't leak but if it's not there at all it doesn't matter. They literally check everything over here, so you can't get away with much.

Edit: Forgot to mention why this is a problem - because anything that passes this inspection without work can get top dollar overnight. I bought a $300 car, put $400 in parts and taxes on it to register in my name, and sold it for $1500 two weeks later because it had a fresh inspection.
