Brought my drums in for resurfacing and they said they don't have enough meat on them...thing is these are nearly brand new.

Found specs online for Nom Dia and Max Dia. and the difference is only 2mm. How could this be possible? I was told you need at least 15-20mm to resurface. These are for a 1995 Yukon with 11" drums. Nom. Dia is 283.4 and Max Dia. is 285.4. Any idea what the deal is?

Shop probably doesn't want to bother machining what to them will be super outdated technology. Its easier for them to install a new drum than to resurface an old one. Take it to a different shop.

It should be 1.5-2mm to resurface, and the drums are pretty much a good or replace, not enough metal to resurface. It's pretty normal anymore. Maybe GM didn't put enough stroke in the wheel cylinders to accommodate any more.

It's not wheel cylinder stoke but brake shoe radius (long wear in to new drum size) and the weight of the extra material. 2mm is fine for a clean up cut but not for any kind or gouges from shoe rivets. Still can get drums for less than $120/pair. Back in the day shoes were ground to fit.

There is plenty of meat to skim when installing new shoes. I had the same initial response as well, so I took them to a different shop who were only too happy to help. The joy of living in a throw-away, replace with cheap sh$t society I guess.
