Guys, I'd like to know if the Vortec 454 offers a much better performance over the normal older head like the case of the old 350 Vortec head out performs gigantically its older non-vortec counterpart.

also please let me know where and how expensive these heads could be found, in stock condition.

Thanks.

The short answer to your question is no. The Vortec heads I have of my Gen VI is a typical oval port style head. And I believe they are a 112cc head because of the chamber design. I am not an engine guy at all, but I can tell you that those heads are not a power adder like a SBC version.

I'd imagine the heads could be pulled from a pull-you-own yard for cheap.

HTH.

Thanks Lamogo, then maybe only the compression ratio might be higher, but really no better flow as the SBC version, though if they're cheap at a junk yard mayve the higher comp with a good 280 comp cam can juice it up a bit, I currently have a holley 1850 600 CFM vac sec on it, I know it is kinda small but the 700 I was looking 4 originally was not available and the crap it had originally was tearing apart LOL.

View media item 31454It depends what you're comparing them to. They flow decent and the small combustion chamber can be a nice bump on CR for engines with flat top pistons.

No, they won't flow as well as the 049 heads that are very popular on big blocks, but when compared to anything from a tbi era big block. They should also be more efficient than the 049s though.

So if you are building an engine, I would put in domed pistons and run the 049s. If you already have the engine built with flat tops, then the vortec would be a decent option. It really depends on what you're doing.

As stated previously, it would help if you gave everyone a little bit more information to help you. What heads are you comparing them to, and what era of short block? Mark IV, or Gen V, or ....?

BTW, I run a 600 on my stock Gen V BBC with out any issue. My truck doesn't rev past 4,500-5,000 and so there is no real need for me to have more CFM. I had a 750 Quadrajet first but it didn't have the choke parts so I replaced it with the Edlebrock and I have not been able to tell the difference performance wise.

According to my research, the reason later 454s put out lower numbers is because emissions have choked the life out of them. So they typically respond well to a proper cam, one that should be in there from the factory (i.e. not so aggressive you can't drive it on the street), and also a bump in compression. If you are seeking the best HP to $$ ratio that's where I would begin looking. However, someone else might have first hand knowledge that could chime in to help you.
