Had current Optima's for about 10 years, but will replace with Odyssey(s) when time comes.
Not sure why folks run stuff all the way to battery when fuse center is right by the firewall.

I'm surprised no one commented on how it looks like there are 2 positive cables? My tray looked like that and it is a lot better after a wire wheel and a few coats of rattle-can silver.
As far as batteries, I was getting take-outs from a local salvage yard for $30 with a 6 month warranty. Otherwise the Energizer line from Sams Club cost a little more but have an extra year of free replacement so I figure they must be good or better if they can have a longer guarantee than all other brands I've looked at.

I always assumed the 2 positive cables were normal

I was messing with my battery and cleaning up and over flow (2nd time due to ****** carquest battery) when I noticed a fuse relay connecting to the postive terminal then going all the way across the engine bay to something mounted near the master cylinder on the firewall. Anyone know what this is? Also any good battery brand recommendations? My truck is a 96 k1500 reg cab 5.7 nv3500

I don't know about the cable to the battery, but the box on your firewall is the factory cruise control 'brain'. My '99 Suburban (completely unmodified vehicle) has the identical unit. That's why the big cable goes to the throttle linkage. Surprised no one else got this.

We didn't have to point it out... Because if you read the replies, JW already knew what it was. lol
The wire that runs through the rubber hood seal is not factory. That is what he is asking about.

I've had good luck w/ die hards. 2 of vehicles are running on the factory 2014 Batteries, so far so good, never looked to see if they have any markings past the oem names. my grand am that I just sold after dd for 13 yrs had a used die hard that I bought from the j/y 4yrs ago for $30 & was still running strong. my truck has a used die hard that i got from the j/y about 18mos ago. I don't think I put 500mi on it since putting the battery in. I maybe started the truck twice for 2min ea last winter, no issues.
