1.72 isn't worth the effort with stock being 1.7. I'm not sure if a 1.8 fits without rubbing. Your justification for shorties over longtubes doesn't make sense. Please elaborate.

Ease of installation is one thing, having to reroute and re-mount a bunch of components on the underside of the truck to make room for long tubes seems like a PITA, that's about the biggest thing really, I just want the motor to breath a bit better and try to keep the underhood temps down if possible with shorties.
Got any recommendations for valve-train upgrades?

See that actually makes sense. When someone says they don't want to cuz it's their DD all I can think of is that, somehow, that mod will make driving to work suck balls and be unreliable. There are headers out there that include a front section of piping 3" in diameter that goes as far as the cats. It eliminates the choke point right after the stock manifolds. As far as rockers go yeah the roller stuff has less friction but IMO not worth the time or money unless it increases lift.

Great score! Very nice looking truck... And...a 454.

There is no replacement for displacement

And while on the subject of performance I will add...

"Adding power makes you faster on the straights. Subtracting weight makes you faster everywhere.”. -Colin Chapman, founder of Lotus

The 454 weighs about 685 lbs.
A 350 weighs about 535 lbs.
A difference of 150 lbs.

So driving the 454 is kinda like driving a 350 with 3 bags of cement on the hood. Hence, decrease in performance return on the increase of cubes. And most of all.... Handling.

Perhaps a fiberglass cowl induction hood. That would remove one bag. Think those hoods look good too.

I'm with supercharged, you probably won't see much of a gain with the roller tip rockers. That said, when I rebuilt my engine I did swap to them. I really wouldn't mess with the valve-train unless you're going to do a cam swap, so you should probably do a cam swap haha

A tune and exhaust is going to help a lot. If you're going to ditch the cats I would just do full custom exhaust. And I would just tune for 89 or 91 octane.

The effect on vehicle dynamics of a light hood on a 5700# truck is akin to lipstick on a pig. We're not talking about sports cars here. It would literally do nothing.

Thx. That's a good point.

It's only a weight reduction of about 50 lbs. It is a step, however, in that direction. Which I think is important enough to point out.

It's an effort in futility with an all iron big block up front and I doubt it would even cut 50#. Do the hood cuz it looks cool or you need the clearance. You're just lying to yourself if you think it's going to make that truck turn. There's much cheaper lower hanging fruit elsewhere.

The most cost effective way to add power is to add a supercharger or turbo, I would do that first.
Doing a bunch of little things will add up in cost, and you won't feel a difference nearly as much as forced induction.
Find a used whipple and get it tuned.

Though i'll probably get shorty gibson headers since at least its an improvement on stock design. The shorties are the only type i can get and pass smog in CA.

It doesn't matter if it's my newphew Derick Krammer running his American Ethanol NHRA Pro-stock Dodge Dart Running mid 6's, or a 3 ton truck.

For every 100 lb. reduction in the weight of the vehicle you gain a ~10th of second on your time slip.

So while you're installing internals to lower reciprocating/rotating weight; don't forget the weight of the truck itself. The hood idea is just one example.

-One input to increase while all other inputs are held fixed, a point will eventually be reached at which additions of the input yield progressively smaller, or diminishing, increases in output,
