Just bought a 89 k3500 454tbi single wheel. Was pulling a trailer when I had to stop then when I went to go again I heard a pop and now it won't go anyway. The fluid is good and when you change into gears you hear the rpm drop a little but it still won't move. When you go put it back into park it makes a horrible grinding noise. I just dropped the pan and no chunks or anything and the tranny fluid looks bright red and good. What the heck is going on?! Do I need a new tranny? Could it have something with the transfer case? Also I towed it about 1/2 mile while it was physically in the position "park".

The grinding going back to park sounds like the transfer case isn't engaged.

Do you know what case you have? It would be rare for a np205 to have an issue but possibly the linkage. Np208, 241 or the borg warner could have snapped the chain or have a shift fork issue kicking it back to neutral.
Have you tried driving it with the transfer case in 4hi or low?

Get the tires off the ground, have someone shift the TC thru the gears while you rotate the drive lines. If the front never engages or you can spin the rear in park, I'd say your chain broke.

Well I towed it with another truck with its winch and it was in the park position as it was being towed so that's probably a good sign of the chain right? This is kinda my first 4wd so it's a little new to me

Would you recommend a rebuild or just replace?
