Hi. I recently tackled swapping a complete 98 Silverado interior into my 96 chassis cab 1t and I am slowly figuring out that the cubby hole instead of a airbag isn't so much a myth. I swear I seen one, but I couldn't place it. I was reading further in the forum and came across another member mentioning something about it.

The 96 never came with airbags in it. AT worse case I will just throw the dummy bag in the hole and call it complete, but it has a fair amount of weight to it. The bracket that supports it bolts up in the '98 cab, but the '96 cab doesn't have provisions for the support bracket. Short of tek screwing it to the cowel with a spacer behind it, I'm kind of still figuring ideas over a cup of coffee here.

I thought of drilling the spot welds on the '98 and then re-welding it to the '96.. but would require pulling the heater core.. and (sigh) that's extensive over the top work. I just don't want a gaping hole there.

My fear is without good support the airbag weight will screw the dash up over time.

Would anyone be kind enough to post a link so I could figure out a part number. Google is finding everything but what I am looking for.

BTW the conversions going great, I love the '98 dash in the truck. It really updates the interior.

Thanks

It's not a myth, it came on the 97+ 2500/3500 trucks since they were not required to have airbags. Not sure if you'd be able to find the part new though, the wrecking yard might be your best bet

@Colonel Sanders is correct, they were available in 97+ eight lug trucks. I believe the GM part number is 15050606, although it's a discontinued part so as mentioned your best bet is probably a salvage yard.

Salvage yard is going to be the best bet and really the only choice out there, unless you want to spend money on Ebay. Got my dash for $40, they shouldn't charge more than $10 for the cubby hole in the dash, since the dash was $40, they shouldn't charge much for that piece.
