Looking to retrofit my 1990 c1500 from r12 to r134a. I already have the fittings installed and the system has leaked out a long time ago. I pulled a vacuum for 30 minutes and it held at 28inches of mercury for 30 minutes. My question is what type of oil do i use after flushing the evaporator and hoses and how much. Do i use PAG or ESTER. Also i think i need different pressure switches as r134 runs at different pressures. Any advice would be great.

Page oil..

yes to new pressure switches.

"IF" I remember right it's 8oz of oil.

You will also need the correct style orifice tube.

And just a side note but, the condensor will not be that effective as a 134 style.. the r12 and 134 condensors are totally different in design. The r12 one will "work" just will not be that efficient..

As far as pounds of Freon go... at my shop we do it by the gauge numbers, so that number I do not have..lol..

Can you recommend a better condenser? I assume it needs to be a parallel flow style.

Thanks. I just changed the pressure switches. all is well with the pressures. I would absolutely agree needing to change the condenser. I will see how it goes. Since I did not change my condenser i only put in 6oz. of ester oil. Pag is apparently not compatible with mineral oil found in the old r12. I drained the compressor of the old oil and flushed the evaporator and lines. Seems to be ok at 40 degrees out of center vents and compressor is cycling well. Thanks for all the help. Anything I am missing??
