I bought a 1992 K2500 Silverado heavy half ton about a month ago. Always liked these trucks, never owned one. The engine runs great, the body is rust free (has some dents), but the 700R4/4L60 trans was totally fried. I got it cheap for a project to work on over the summer.
I pulled the trans and had it rebuilt locally. Had them put in all the popular upgrades to beef it up. Cost $1,500 out the door with tax and everything. Been driving it for 2 weeks. At 1st, torque converter lockup wasn't happening. Then after a few drive cycles it started working for the 1st few miles, then would quit locking up. Checked out all the truck side wiring and all checked good. It was energizing and holding the tcc lockup solenoid perfectly every time.
Trans came with a good warranty. Thought about taking the truck to them and having them troubleshoot it, but didn't really want to. So I bought a new TCC lockup solenoid from Rock Auto and put it in myself. When I pulled the old one it was obvious it was the original, or very old. Took it for a spin with the new TCC solenoid and it has lockup, even after a hour of driving. Before it would lose lockup after about 5 minutes of driving. The trans shifts better through the gears and downshift to pass happens way smoother and with the proper amount of peddle application. I used to have to push it to the floor to get that to happen. Seems like the bad/leaky TCC solenoid was somehow affecting shift points in the trans. That's what it seemed like anyhow.
Well it drives perfect now and I'm very happy with it. I also took out the original carpet and installed a new one. Installed a new hitch and trailer brake controller so I can tow a small camp trailer. Next is body work and paint to make it look new again. K, thanks for reading if you made it this far!
