I wanted one with the tach and found the one below.

My initial research indicates that the 2nd style should be the type that a 92 would have had from the factory. With that being said i assume it would be pretty east to switch to to the 2nd style assuming i can find one?

Should be a simple bolt up deal since they are exactly the same thing except one has a tach and one doesn't. The thing I am most afraid of is, it might not work because your's didn't have one in the first place. I watched a video of guy wanting to switch his Buick LeSabre's cluster with the no-tach to the tach and speedo cluster and it didn't work, none of the gauges worked, since the no-tach cluster had idiot lights. It is also worth the try, I think, at least then you can say that you tried it. :) I would say "go for it!" :D If it don't work, oh well.

If it doesn't work: If you want one that bad, you might have to take a wiring harness from another truck that had the tach and speedo cluster and insert it into your truck, which would involve taking out the dash, blah blah blah, all that nasty work. If you really want a tach, but would rather not dissemble the dash, I would just suggest buying an aftermarket tach and if you have an aftermarket radio, just put it where the factory radio is, in that cubby square, or on the bottom of the dash instead, I would personally put it in the cubby square if you have time, if not, and love the space, just place it on the bottom of the dash so you can see it.

I wonder if a 92 speedo/tach assembly would fit in a 1990 1500 GMC that already has the four gauges. It looks like the same shape.

Both scenarios have been discussed extensively on these forums and similar, I know both you guys are relatively new (well OP has been here many years but not very active) but some searching/reading would enlighten you.

In short though,

On the 1992-1994 trucks a tach cluster from another 1992-1994 is a drop-in with zero other mods needed. Just be sure it comes from a truck with the same type of engine - V6 or V8 depending on what you have, or the tach will not read correctly. You can also easily transplant your odometer so that your mileage is kept accurate.

For 1988-1991 trucks you can either look for a fairly elusive tach cluster that was optional on SOME 1991 models though they can be tough to find. It's a drop-in on a 1991 truck; requires minor re-wiring on 1988-1990 (3 wires must be moved in the harness connector.) To use a 1992-1994 cluster in a 1988-1991 truck is a much more involved job though a write-up is posted on several Chevy truck forums around the net.
