I was just cruising down the highway the other day in my truck when i heard a loud bang and immediately lost overdrive. The truck drove home fine in 3rd but had fully lost reverse and attempts to go into overdrive before it bangs back into 3rd. Pretty sure i broke a hard part inside (reverse band, so I've heard...), so that being said, suggestions on where to purchase a new, mildly built 4l80? something with a 1500-2000 stall and can handle 500hp. just gonna save up and buy a new one since it cost 1600 to get one rebuilt....

Find a well reputed local builder and talk to him about what you really want. $1600 for a decently built 80E is nothing. My 60E rebuild in the red truck was over $2500 including R&R and will probably explode on me again someday...

A bone stock 80E can handle more than 500HP no problem.

EDIT - This truck is running a stock 4L80E with a TransGo HD2 shift kit, that's it.

I'm sure it can handle it, but can it do it reliably? I see the point on getting it built. Ive found new crate 80es with 3 year warranties for 2500...

That Colorado has been together for quite a while now, and survived many dyno pulls and street burnouts. I'd say that 4L80E is going to live for a long time.

I just always recommend a well reputed local builder over any kind of new crate trans. The horror stories I've read about the online vendors are enough to keep me using local people for the rest of my life. If I have problems with my local build, I can go up and talk to someone in person.

I couldn't agree more!

Bit the bullet and took the truck to a reputable local transmission shop. Had them tear it out and inspect, turns out the forward drum spun a bearing and got hot and trashed the clutches, so she was in for an overhaul. Also opted to do the full HD2 transgo kit while they were at it. $2116 dollars later.....she should be running this weekend. Still amazed that the truck was fully drivable in 1-3 and R (started working again randomly) with a trashed bushing. Even the tech at the shop was amazed that i drove it there with the damage that was done.
