My ol pickup just runs smooth and steady but occasionally you put your foot in it to pull in to traffic and she just sputters and falls on her face. Doesn't die and picks up and runs out fine. Any ideas? Has new AC plugs, cap and rotor, fuel and air filters. 98 5.0. Stock like a rock

Are you getting any codes?

A fuel pressure test like Hipster said would help rule out any fuel pump, injector or regulator issues there.

A failing catalytic converter can sometimes cause issues in heavy acceleration. You can remove the upstream oxygen sensors and use a pressure gauge to see if the converters are blocked...

No codes. And generally if it's the cat doesn't it basically always stumble? This is just literally once in a while, otherwise, she runs out great

When my converters were bad, it would bog down under prolonged moderate acceleration...like merging onto an interstate. It got to the point that it would start slowing down and force me to pull over, presumably because the exhaust gases had no where to go.

Under light acceleration it was fine.

Yeah, not like that at all. It's just occasionally when you put your foot in it from a dead idle to pull away, it will stumble and then push through and run fine. It's happened when it's cold right after start, and when it's warm.

Unplug the EGR valve and see if it gets better. you will get a check engine code but it wont effect performance beside clearing up your problem

Yeah, that doesn't sound like a catalytic converter issue. Maybe Throttle position sensor, idle air control valve, fuel pressure, something like that.

It'd help if it threw a code.
