Oh and you also need a dial indicator to set the backlash, which is important as the input shaft rides over the main shaft with a thrust bearing.

Are you planning on rebuilding yours soon? If I recall your missing 3rd?

Yeah, third gear missing was me. I still haven't decided what I'm doing as of yet. Like every other truck I buy, This one is a lawn ornament at the moment.

I'm taking it in to a local Aamco shop and have them work up a quote for a rebuild. They are the only ones I can find locally that will actually rebuild the transmission, not swap it out for a remanufactured unit. I'll see what they come back with and decide if I want to try to tackle it myself or not.

Well Aamco came back with the quote for the rebuild... $2200... Bearings, synchros, seals, case saver, top cover, and labor. I was expecting half that...

Yeah I'm just going to have to get it over with. The price for parts seems reasonable, but 12 hours of labor at $120/ hour is what is killing me. It's out of the truck and torn down for inspection already. To have them put it back together and back in the truck with no repairs is still $550. May as well just bite the bullet and get it done while it's out and apart.

Damn. I remember when I had a 4l80e rebuilt. I brought them the tranny and they rebuilt for $1200, that even included an upgraded converter. This was only a few years back

After their initial test drive, they said that no major parts seemed to be damaged and it would only need bearings, synchros, and seals so I was expecting around $1200. After they got it apart, none of the gears or shafts are damaged, but they found that the thrust bearing for the main shaft had been bad for some time and the shaft moving laterally was starting to damage the case. Same with the input shaft, that was the noise I could hear when I would hold in the clutch pedal. Also, the socket for the shifter in the top cover was pretty badly worn.
