It's not mine; feel free to use it as you wish though. :D

The F450/F550 chassis cab trucks are the same thing. Narrow rear. It's an industry standard, as well as having the parallel straight, flat frame rails typically 34" wide etc. so that aftermarket body makers don't have to make special bodies for GM, Ford, Dodge.

I haven't paid a lot of attention to Fords as I don't care for them but I think the F450 pickup uses a lighter rear axle than the F450 chassis cab. I dunno.

I'd say if you weren't gonna load the thing super heavy you could have someone machine you up some nice bolt-on spacers. I'm not the kind of guy to worry about spacers (remember your front hubs have some attached from the factory) if they're made well and torqued properly, but 3"~4" spacers on each side would have me worried about stressing the axle bearings if I was planning on using the truck to its capacity.

On the spacer subject though if you intend on running anything fatter than the stock 225/70/19.5 tire, say for example 245/70/19.5 is a nice upgrade - those are actually #1 slightly too fat for the HD's 6" wide wheels, though they're "OK" on them - #2 if you load the truck down the duals may rub sidewalls on each other and that's not a good thing. Spacer in between the wheels would be smart but then you have to start worrying about stud length plus the flange on the hub as these are hub-piloted wheels.

realistically, to do what i'd like, i'd be in for a custom rear end and axles to do this... which could get upwards of the cost of an engine or trans.... damn... I won't be sending my boy to Harvard it looks like...

Yeah there's a guy that built a mini-Kodiak/Topkick out of a 3500HD, over on 3500HD.com. Cummins swap, 9 speed Eaton, air ride rear, and now he's collecting parts to turn it into a 4x4. You can look in the member projects forum over there for the post by "fabman72"

i had one in my '67 International tow truck......iirc she had a 345CI engine too..... mine didn't have air brakes.....and didn't too good with something on the hook either, LOL.
We had a power stroke dually in the mid nineties with a split axle, have no idea if that was ever a factory option or if somebody made it happen. Pretty nice to have though.

If you want to be a legitimate badass get a 2speed rear end out of a 2 ton. Run a ac and air brakes and all

put a spiked out plow on it, armor over the windows and mow down zombie scum all day long!

sorry, you said badass and I pictured a doomsday ride.

theres a topkick front end on a basic dually like mine around here. it's black.

then i would suggest the rear out of a larger truck......the 3500HD was built to work at a 15,000 lb GVW...lookin purty wasn't it's main goal, LOL.....gottcha.

it's not about looking purty... it's more to make it blend in as best as possible as a pickup or my pickup would be best. yea some guys will know what it is by the grille spacer, but there will be many that will see a difference but not know what it is... and that's what i'm going for

I've been looing the last few days and can't seem to find solid info on the capabilities of the 3500hd towing. I haven't seen any GCWR on it at all. one guy said on another forum it's on 17,000 lbs... that doesn't seem right for a truck like that... all other 15,000lbs GVWR trucks seem to be rated 22,500-26,000 it seems. WTH!?
