I have a 98 k1500 silverado 5.7 vortec 316k miles, my motor has low compression in two cylinders 3&8. 3 is rings, 8 is valves. On top of that the whole engine is a vacuum leak, it leaks oil, and loses coolant... my question is should i replace it or rebuild it. If i rebuild how much would it cost for parts? New gaskets, rings, seals. Ill need to get the tools for reaming and honing/polishing the cylinders, a valve spring compressor and a valve lapping tool as well.

I have other engines that will need the tools eventually im more concerned about part price. I can do the work but is it cheaper to buy a 5.7 or rebuild one? I build bmws all the time. And it would cost less than 1000$ to do a full rebuild on my m50 whereas a head is 1500 or a whole motor is 3500. I dont want to buy a new motor if i don't have to.

You can find those engines all over for $500 already pulled. Rebuild would potentially cost just as much if not more, plus much more labor.

If you want a manual swap, might as well find yourself a whole donor truck so you have everything you need. Not sure where you're from, but just look around for one with a rusted frame for cheap
