Hello everyone.
This my first posting on this site.

My issue is that the engine in my 1994 gmc k1500 pickup has started making a knocking sound and a slight rough idle. It does not go away when warmed up, so it's not piston slap. I plan on taking out the engine and rebuilding it. That might take a while, so I'm wondering the average cost of a replacement junkyard motor while I'm rebuilding the other one.

I don't want to get rid of the truck because it's awesome off road and fun to drive. I got it for $500. I put a new fuel pump in after it died on me, as well as new springs and shackles in the rear.

Any replies are appreciated.
Thank you :gm:

My brother and I will put the new ( to us ) motor in ourselves.
What would it cost roughly, to get a shop to do it? I would prefer to do it myself for self satisfaction and cost saving.

I'm not trying to be annoying with all these questions.

cost will depend on where you live, where you go & what's included.

looking up a 5.7L gas for your 1994 k1500 resulted in the following (this is local to me):

Everett's auto Brockton, ma they test, pull & warranty w/ extended warranties available.
http://www.everettsautoparts.com/basic-parts-search/
1990
Engine Assembly
Chevy Truck 1500 Series 147k, B 01700943 $500.58

this engine may or may not include the exhaust manifolds, clutch fan, flywheel & wire harness. these parts will vary on engine to engine. talk to the salesman first & ask.

Everett's also has a self serve yard. the plus to this is that it will cost less. (Engine Assembly (core) $150 & what's included?) & they do sell some tools. the downside is that you have to pull it yourself, its untested & less of a warranty if any. also being self serve, inventory is a hit or miss, the salesman cannot tell you what vehicles are out there let alone the parts availability. they can give you an interchange though. I've vehicles in this yard swapped out in as little as 3 days. this is a high turn around yard. if you go here, don't ever wait to come back for a part, it most likely wont be there.

Pick-n-Pull has 48 U.S. & 4 Canadian stores. they are self serve only. everything is untested. the stores in my area do not sell tools.
300-4F Engine F-Inj W/Access Car $179.99 core $49.99 this does not include the harness. comes w/ a 30 day warranty w/ additional warranties available @ an extra cost. here the salespeople can give you an interchange slip & are able to tell you what they have for vehicles. but can not tell you the parts availability. supposed to be a 60-90 day turn around, but have seen some sit around longer. usually a 50% off sale weekend on what you pull near the major holiday, check your local store for exact dates.

www.car-part.com is a great site for locating parts. not every yard uses this. the parts are usually more money & that's because the parts are part of the full-serve section & are tested (honest yards). I am leery of the yards that don't advertise the mileage or provide picture proof. also those that don't give a price. gives the feeling that price changes on who answers the phone & mood. actually true in some cases.

another good tool that not all yards use is www.row52.com you can get alerts on fresh arrivals, a single pic is provided (sometimes none) & vin's are included.

hope this helps
