Alright guys; I hate to bring up an old thread, but I'll be taking apart my tow mirrors (GMT800 style) in a few months when I am home again on spring break. I'm curious to hear if anyone has any suggestions on how to get these little tabs loose to let the glass come free from the back. I know Dave said he used his fingers and a thin screw driver, but what has everyone else done? Trying to get a good idea of what exactly I'll be in for when I get to this upcoming project...

Also, are these tabs really as fragile as everyone makes them sound? I'm sure I'll break at least a couple of them as I have a pair of big clumsy hands.

My tabs were extremely fragile!! Even after reading Daves information, and understanding how the mirror comes apart, I still broke half of the tabs. The majority of the stuff I work on, is older, and brittle, so I am used being very careful taking things apart. Anyway, it could be worse, at least the mating surface on the motor side is flat and smooth, so I really don't see why some good 3M double sided automotive tape won't do the trick...?

If anyone has any other suggestions on how to fix this, I am all ears. Other than unclipping the glass panels 98MNChevy, the rest is pretty easy. Especially with that nice right up from Dave. I had just planned on separating the amber light and arrow circuits so I can have my chicken lights! However, after I saw Daves mirrors painted gloss black, I knew I had to do the same. That looks so sick!!

I'll let you know how the 3M tape works out and then at least you'd have an option if they did break. I see you're a MN fella too....word. :)

Hey, thanks for both of your great replies! I didn't even think about using 3M tape, that's a really good idea. The reason I was asking about how fragile the tabs are is because I picked up a set of 07-13 tow mirrors with the little arrow blinkers in the upper glass. I plan on taking the upper glass out of the mirrors on my 98 and then swapping in the upper glass and wiring for the blinkers from the 07-13 mirrors and then wiring the lights to the main wiring harness so they blink like normal.

I was thinking worst case scenario, once I had everything wired up and 100% convinced it was working how I wanted I figured I could just JB Weld the new upper glass to the base inside the mirror. As long as it didn't interfere with the power adjust option, I think it'd be fine as a last resort.

Where abouts are you from in Minnesota? I'm from the "west metro". If you know where Wayzata/Ridgedale is, go about another 20 minutes west. Maple Plain, to be exact.

Yeah for sure! I'm up in Elk River.
You should totally do it. It is taking a while but I know it'll be worth it. There were a few wires right under the dash you can easily access for your left and right signal lights, clearance lights are easy too! Are you putting in diodes or a resistor for your amber "clearance"light? This is my first time using those, so I'm curious how it'll go.

I got the glass from the factory 07-13 tow mirrors swapped into the aftermarket GMT 800 style 88-98 tow mirrors over the weekend. The aftermarket mirrors I have were fully optioned except the side markers, but I pulled the wires for the heat option for two reasons. First, I knew I'll never use or need the heated option as I've had these mirrors for about 3 years now and have never hooked the heat up or wished I had it hooked up. And second, the heater was broken on one of the donor mirrors.

After removing the wires from the loom on my 88-98 mirrors, I ran the factory GM wires for the factory GM 07-13 tow mirror blinkers through the loom. Then it was simply reassembling all the wiring to the new glass and popping the new glass on to the motor. The mirrors from factory 07-13 tow mirrors are a direct fit to the aftermarket 88-98 GMT 800 style tow mirrors. Once the mirrors were reassembled, I bolted them back to the door and started running wires through the kick panels and up through the rubber boots into the doors. In order to allow easy removal in the event that I ever need to take the mirrors off in the future, I did simple Male to Female connections and then taped the connectors.

The blinkers work flawlessly and are pretty nice! Going to take a few days to get used to, but I like it. I've never seen any GMT400s with these style of blinkers in their tow mirrors. Well.. at least none that have the proper base so that the mirrors actually sit correctly on the door and the body lines.. I'll try and grab some more pictures in the daylight!

Hey that looks great!! I know exactly what you mean about the body lines, some towing mirrors do not stick out perpendicular to the truck and they just do not look right at all. (That's just my opinion) Yours look real nice though! (That's a fact!) :)
What did you end up using to hold the glass onto the motors in the back? JB weld or 3M tape?

I finally finished buffing my last piece out last night, so tonight I'll be putting them back together again......very..very carefully.

Last picture, upper left is NOT a scratch, just an extension cord......almost had a stroke this morning over that. :(

BTW I know about the lacquer over enamel rule, but there are some exceptions. I'd be happy to hear from others on this topic. It can be done in certain situations, with good results. However, it can also make a real mess.

Ben

Looks great.

Mine looked great till my tired threw rocks at them and bigs hit them. Honestly I'm wishing I went with the textured black mirrors....
Hey thanks Dave! Yeah I hear ya. I should probably have my head examined on this one. Show room finish just hanging off the side of the door, and knobby tires.... We'll see how it holds up. At least my rig is mostly a street queen, where I bet your rig see's some actual off-road up there in WA.? Your thread is what gave me the inspiration to modify my mirrors. Thanks again for taking the time to write that up! :worship:
I'm going to do that %20 tint across the amber light like you did too.

98MNChevy got his mirrors on too! We're gonna be some cool cruising cats.
