Starting this build thread in the middle of my build, but at this point I don't think there is an end to it. I got my truck due to divorce. At the time, I was putting a new engine in my 84 GMC, using my ex's VW as my daily. She reported it stolen, I ended up driving my dad's Isuzu Trooper. Someone else wanted to trade the non running GMC for a running truck, so I ended up with the 88 Chevy.

I didn't think I'd go this far with the truck. Maybe a drop at the most.

I'll try to keep this in order.

I agreed to a trade if those 20's and taillights were swapped. A common thread with my trucks is ralley's with Astro van center caps.

Phase one. I swapped rear ends to get a 3:42 ratio.

A broken trans started the LS swap. Looking for a trans, a friend told me we could LS swap for what a trans would cost.

I want to state up front. This is the method I chose. It isn't right or wrong. It works. For me. I will answer any question in PM.

As the title states, this is a budget build.

Donor Avalanche: $750
Kept, engine, trans, harness, PCM, part of exhaust.
Sold rest: $805
Car Shoppe engine plates: $50
Harness Rework: $150
JTR steam vent for upper rad hose: $40
Driver's side batt tray: $15
Fuel line parts: $100
Exhaust: $100
Ebay air intake:$50

All prices are estimates, it's been over a year since I've done this.

Exhaust. For 3 months I drove with the Avi's cats. Nothing else. It was loud. Using the head pipe off the Avi, and cut offs from a 2010 Camaro, I built the exhaust. Mufflers are Dynomax Race Bullets. It drones at 55. I want to change my muffler.

Add $75 for v-band clamps.

Some time between the initial purchase and LS, I had to repair the driver's door striker. I have new hinges yet to be installed.

Drop. Started off 2" springs. They are used off Craigslist. Settled to more than 2". Eventually I added 2" drop shackles in the rear. While doing the swap, I added the hangers. Swapped my stock hangers for the dropped hangers, and helped a friend do a axle flip on his truck. I made a bracket to hold the e brake cables.

Notice a theme? We've gone from behind a trailer to a garage, to another garage. This truck has been built, at my old trailer, my dad's shop where I keep my 220 volt welder and my friend's shop where he has a 110 volt welder. I'm now living with my GF, so there will pics from her driveway as well. I lost a 960 square foot in the divorce. Luckily I have great family and friends, who let me use their shops.

Fuel lines. Thousands of way to do this. I wanted to use my OE fuel lines, with adapters. First attempt was a fuel line repair kit and nylon hose. Current set up is A/N fittings making an adapter from the OE stainless hose to the LS fuel rail.

Part numbers are Russell, 640820,640830,640850,640860. Swivel connectors are part number 96106-1

Up to date. I hit a deer. Snagged a complete front clip off a 94 Suburban 4wd. Also go the tow hooks, which are a bolt on to a 2wd frame, if someone wants tow hooks.

Lost 3rd and 4th in the 4L60. Everyone has suggested a 80, however for my goals it's not needed. I have a friend helping me with the trans work.
