99 Sub. 3rd brake light: how to diagnose

Hello,

I have a 99 Suburban that we've had for about a year (our first '99 burned to the ground last year). The 3rd brake light hasn't worked on this one since we've had it. I'm curious where to start diagnosing this problem and what the process is to figure this out.

Remove 3rd brake light from roof, check body side of plug with test light.

Replacement 3rd brake lights are available from a number of vendors. ( complete housing, you toss away the whole unit )
