Ive got a 90 step side that wanders down the road. I replaced the intermediate shaft/rag joint with a used one in good shape. That took some slop out of the steering but it still seems to be all over the road. It takes constant corrections to keep it straight on the highway. The mechanic told me everything steering related had been replaced or is in good shape, tie rods pitman arm etc. What else could be the culprit for the wander?

Im not sure about the steering box. I have no idea if thats original or what. Its got 285's on it now and they are a bit worn. Seems to track straight on level roads and doesn't pull so I assume the alignment is ok?

Any help is appreciated

Jack it up and diagnose it yourself with the help of a friend. Turn the steering shaft at the input of the box and note the pitman arm behavior. Shake each tire top and bottom, side to side, then load the bottom ball joint on a jack stand and repeat checking the ball joint.

Check the frame carefully around the steering box for cracks. Check the pitman arm and the idler arm, they are common issues.

There could be slack in the column as well.

2 or 4 wheel drive? improper caster settings will cause it to wonder. When you go around a corner does the wheel return to straight or do you need to pull it back?

Its a 4 wheel drive. Seems to pull around corners correctly. I will try to get out tomorrow and check things out. Thanks of the info.
