As long as the spline count on the transmission output and transfer case input match up, it should work. Most LS motor mounts have some adjustment in them to move the motor back or forward so you could use that to maintain the same transmission position and not need different drive shafts either. Essentially, you would only be changing the engine and transmission.

Awesome thank you guys! Ill look around for stuff or maybe a donor truck. Ill tackle figuring out the wiring once the engine or donor is sitting in the back yard haha

So ive searched and cant seem to find exactly what im looking for. Does anyone have a link to a build thread or how-to thread for 95 tbi out. 97-99 vortec in? My tbi is getting old and tired and pretty sure compression is falling. Just looking at swapping a 350 vortec but need a parts list or how to for wiring or plug and play harnesses. Or would a 5.3 ls be an easier swap? I dont necessarily need alot of power just want something for a nice daily with 13+ mpg.

Where are you from? What are the pertinent laws regarding inspection and smog testing?

You can purchase stand-alone harnesses for an LS based combination and the transmission you want to run, however your 1995 4L60E transmission would have to go. ( you could change out the valvebody and the few other parts to be compatible but it is hardly worth it ) Not to mention, you will save money on buying flexplate adapters, etc.

The stock TBI fuel pump will need to be changed to go to a high pressure pump. Depending on how your replacement LS engine is set up, you may need either a return style fuel sending unit, or a returnless system.

As far as the computer goes, you can have one flashed to remove vats, etc.

1996 -1997 fuel tank / sender would be appropriate, in 1998, the fuel gauge in the dash was a signal from the PCM, and the fuel sender is not compatible with the older dashes.

There are many questions to be answered, but your absolute best would be to have an entire donor truck with LS combo to transplant.

Or, leave your truck as-is.... and sell it. Buy a vehicle already equipped with a newer LS engine, you will be time and money ahead, especially if you can not work on it yourself.

I live in southern colorado, so no smog stuff. I run side exit with no cats and live right by the police station, they only give me **** about my brake light lol. I have no issue doing the work myself just need to know what im getting myself into. Ill see about a donor truck or just rebuilding the tbi with a few minor upgrades.

No difference time wise between swapping a 96-99 vortec and later they all use the same sensors . You would run every wire minus the coils on a SBC.
Later LSx motors have better power . Not that I advise it but you can do a TBI LSX ifyou wanted too . That would be the simplest .
The 4l60e bolts right up but you need a spacer.
Your going to need vats disabled if you change your ecm out.

If you're still interested in the Vortec swap, I'm about to do it to my 95 Yukon.

You'll need:
GM TBI to Vortec manifold 12486572
Driver's side exhaust manifold or headers with EGR tube. I'm going with Gibson GP102S (if you care about EGR)
EGR tube for Vortec 10242876 (Dorman 598-200) (if you care about EGR)
Chip kit from tbichips.com - pcm chip, 18psi spring, 155LPH Delco fuel pump - http://tbichips.com/?product=custom-chip-kit
Intake bolts (8) - 12550027
Melonized cam gear for dizzy - 19052845
Intake gaskets - Felpro MS901312

Everything else should bolt right up. Reuse dizzy, sensors, etc. from TBI motor.

If you just swapped long blocks wouldnt it be way cheaper to put a 4 barrel 96-99 intake manifold and run and adapter/spacer on top for the TB?

This manifold, Professional Products Cyclone Vortec Intake Manifolds 52007, is only $140, compared to $450!!! I only payed $500 for my complete running 5.3l with harness, acc's, and tranny!!!

I picked up my intake lightly used for $250. The carbed intakes don't have EGR, so if you need it to pass smog, you can't use the carbed intakes.

So a few updates:

1. The dizzy cam gear I listed wouldn't work with my dizzy. My shaft was .430 and no one had a melonized gear for it. I wound up buying this one from Summit: https://www.summitracing.com/oh/parts/sum-850200
2. The 4 door '95 Yukons use a different fuel pump assembly that any of the other trucks. The fuel pump provided with my kit would not work. I used a an entire ACDelco assembly for a 1996 Yukon.
3. The intake bolts are hex head, no post on top. I would suggest finding ones with posts on top for accessories.
4. The thermostat will work, but you'll need a bottom and top gasket as the o-ring will not work.
5. The brake booster fitting will no work. I switched to a 3/8NPT to 1/2" nipple, using a 1/2" rubber hose to the brake booster piece.
6. You need to run a coolant bypass line since the Vortec heads do not have the bypass provision. I ran a 5/8NPT to 5/8" nipple fitting to the water pump, and the line that ran from heater core to the water pump was rerouted to the fitting on the radiator just below the cap.
7. I also needed to modify various brackets to fit the new bolt pattern.

In my opinion the 5.3 ls swap is the easiest. we've done the TBI do 96-98 Vortec swap and its an absolute nightmare... 1.) there is little to no information on how to do it 2.) its impractical due to the work to benefit ratio. and 3.) the 96-98 Vortec engines were good for their time. but if i had to do it all over again id just buy my cousins 2002 Sierra that he wrecked and use it as a donor for the LS swap. its a hell of a lot cheaper and there is insane amounts of power to be had from one... lol
ls swap best
