when i bought the 99 suburban the dealership mentioned they recharged the ac. i didn't bother to test it. well, it doesn't work :/ the compressor would never even turn on. so i put in a whole thing of one of those recharge things and now it clicks on for about 5-10 seconds at a time and then clicks off again and just kind of keeps doing that. i added another half a can and its still doing the same thing. when the compressor turns on the pressure goes below the green area on the gauge thing. does it just need more refrigerant? it still does not blow cold when the compressor goes on though the silver hose thing behind the compressor does get slightly colder to the touch than ambient temperature

Needs more refrigerant. Look at the sticker for the proper fill amount. Ideally you should be using a proper AC gauge set.
ok! i will put the rest of the second can in. i don't have a real gauge set. i'm using the one that came with the "arctic freeze" from o'reilly and then i used the same gauge thing with a second canister of "ac pro" from o'reilly (idk what the difference is between the two)

This X1000. The gauges that come on those cans are wildly inaccurate. I would just take it to a shop and have them charge it properly before you accidentally over-pressurize the system and start breaking things.

You probably already recharged, but one thing I wish I did was add some UV dye when recharging. AC blew cold after a recharge, but then died again 2 weeks later. My guess is a leak, but wasted those cans of refridgerant because I didn't dye it the first time.

Mine had a slow leak from the high side refrigerant valve. Bought a new one from rock auto, @$4 I think. Fixed the leak. I replaced the valve, filed it up with two cans of refrigerant, didn't bother with vacuuming it. Still blowing cold 2 years later.

my defrost is really lame. if i fix my ac will it fix this too?

Depends on what you mean exactly, but it's definitely possible. The A/C always switches on when you have your defroster vents selected. The idea being that the compressor will run and remove humidity from the air that moves across the inside of the windshield. Therefore, removing condensation from the inside of the glass if there is any.

since it seems that simply adding more refrigerant is not fixing my ac i am going to have the shop look at it when they are doing intake gaskets fuel injectors etc. i also got some rainx anti-fog for the inside of the window that should help for the time being.
