Nice. I'll be following this post for info. I also have my first project. It's a 97 z71. Just did fuel pump. Runs like a top. 130k miles. Needs a transmission that I already have and just need to swap out. (Hopefully soon and it's used so we will see how long it lasts I guess. Either way, good practice swapping. Then I can have the original rebuilt) I paid $350 and it's a one owner truck with original window sticker in glove box. Can't wait to get it mobile. Moves now but a roughy creep speed that smooths out around 25 and then 3/4 clutches slipping. Ride on brothers

So, what do you get when you stick two guys out in some front yard under a truck in a severe thunderstorm warning? Answer, a transfer case! And a driveshaft!! And two very wet, un-enthused dudes!!!

Either way, i scored a transfer case and a driveshaft for $175, out of the same wrecked truck my engine came from. I have to take a minute to give a shout out to Eric--the fellow who owns the wreck--for showing compassion in letting me have one hell of a deal on those parts, and an even bigger shout-out to my best friend James for helping me get the thing, even though it was dark, muddy, greasy and storming.

But, the truck will live again!!

Please excuse the horrible picture, my phone is garbage when it comes to photos.

Update! The good: the transfer case is in. The bad: the yokes on the driveshaft are bigger than the old ones. I don't know if i can find a u-joint to fit at the rear axle.. So i may need a different driveshaft.

Another update. I figure out why the u-joints don't fit my truck; the truck i pulled the driveshaft and transfer case from may have had the F44 heavy duty chassis package. Through a little bit of searching i was able to cross reference u-joints that should make it all work. I'm going to get them tomorrow. Hopefully they actually work!

If you can, snatch up the axle too. Youll thank yourself when that 10 bolt gives out.

So, the good news is the truck is more or less done. Driveshaft is installed, and everything works as it should now. The bad news, is I had some unexpected bills, and now i don't have the time or money to keep it. I'm crushed to say this, but i have to sell it now. It runs and drives quite nicely now, so it'll make a good truck for someone.

That's terrible, man. You didn't even get to enjoy the truck, which I'm certain you would have. They are awesome trucks. Plus, you have put the blood, sweat, and tears into it. On the bright side, you got some good experience, as well as the possibility of making some extra cash on it. Well, consider a Gmt400 for the future. They are great vehicles, and work horses. Best of luck to you.

Congratulations?

I'm sorry to hear that, hopefully you can find another way to come up with the cash you need. Selling a project in an emergency always hurts

Thanks for the comments guys. I guess the biggest reason it has to go is because my work hours go severely cut due to my college schedule, and with having to buy books i can't afford to keep insurance on two vehicles. There's a chance if it doesn't sell by November i may just keep it until i go back to full time in employment in December. That's best case scenario, anyways. Worse case is it sells, and then i have a couple pennies to my name and a couple new experiences. It just hurts a little because of all the time and effort i put into it, and all the plans and dreams i had for it. Thanks again guys.
