I'm curious your thoughts on what you ran vs running dual mufflers to dual exit (true dual)...
It's personal preference. Personally, I think a single 3" sounds "smoother" than true duels. I wasn't looking for loud or poppy.
Also, my background is in supercharged 4 cylinder engines. It's extra difficult to make a good sounding exhaust on a 4 banger because there are only 4 exhaust pulses.
When you collect and merge 4 exhaust cycles into an exhaust system it's much easier to distinguish the sound between each cycle as it exits the pipe. That's why 4 bangers with large aftermarket exhaust systems sound like putt, putt, putt, putt. You can actually hear each individual exhaust pulse.
And unless you spend a lot of money on a true equal length header, some of the exhaust might hit the collector at the same time causing 2 or 3 separate sounds exiting the tailpipe which is really bad. It can make a 4 cycle engine sounds like a 2 cycle engine...
With a V8, you have 8 exhaust pulses that get released from the engine in a much tighter sequence. When you merge and collect 8 exhaust pulses into a single exhaust system there is a much better chance of the pulses collecting together without being spaced apart to create one smooth sound as it exit the tailpipe. That's what I was looking for.
With true duels, it's like running two 4 cycle engines next to each other. The exhaust pulses are still released from the engine at the same time in a tight pattern. But by the time they to travel to the exhaust tip it would be very difficult to make sure all 8 come out in a clean orderly fashion to create a smooth sound. That is why true duels can sound garbley, rough, and aggressive. There might be 2, 3 or 5 exhaust pulses exiting at the same time.
But again, some guys like that sound.
Of course a good muffler can take care of any sounds but good mufflers can be restrictive.
Finally, true duels isn't a real options for Suburbans because the size and location of the 42 gallon gas tank.
