installing a new door handle and the lock cylinder will not stay in place. The spring that is to hold it in place works, but it's just too loose. This is the second truck I've changed the door handle and had the same issue. Am I missing something?

I had the same issue installing lock cylinders on both passenger and drivers side. Ended up being bad casting when they made the handles. I simply filed mine and that fixed it. Both sides wouldn't spin to unlock/lock and passenger side kept falling out. I just used small file and that fixed the issue. Hope this helps!

Just had the same problem. Dorman handles? I used 88-94 lock cylinders. Key looks older but they work.

I was reading reviews on Amazon about the different handles available, and came to the conclusion that in this case, it was worth the extra bucks to get an OEM handle. I did order one, and it fit and functions perfectly.

I switched to 3500 HD handles. They work great and are much stronger. I did have to modify the lock arms to make them work.

Man as much as I love 94-up HD handles it just skeeves me to see them on anything lighter duty than a dually. They look weird! My opinion, anyway.

On the other hand, seeing a 91-93 HD looks bizarre to me as well, because they still had the regular truck handles on those models. It took 'em a few years to start using the Topkick/Kodiak handles.

Call me the archeologist cause I'm digging up old posts.

Same problem today with Dorman units. Lock cylinder is "longer" than the cast not allowing the cylinder wedge lock to engage. Glad I'm not the only one.

I friggan hate autozone right now. ********.

I swapped to the 88-94 smooth painted handles 9n my 98 n had a lil bit oftrouble gettin lock to seat in. I think ita the tang or whatever comes out at just a slight angle so u gotta push in pretty hard to get it to pop.

I thought the original lock cylinders on my 96 were shot. so I bought new ones along with new exterior handles because the original handles were beginning to crack.

After dismantling all the inner workings of the doors, giving EVERYTHING a THOROUGH cleaning, the original door cylinders--along with everything else--worked like new. I did install the new exterior door handles though.

I was so impressed I then proceeded to dismantled the doors on my 97, 01 and 06 and proceeded to clean and grease all lock, latch and window mechanisms in them too........

It made a difference in how well they worked.

I bought handles and locks, the handles held the locks fine. I don't know the brand, they were on ebay. But I have seen others that won't hold the lock. The only reason I replaced the handles was because at 30yr old I guessed they were wore out. This was not the case. After comparing the old to new I think the originals are still better. The barrel that holds the lock is thicker, the bottom of the barrel that the face of the lock sits against is smooth and free of burrs. It also had a round seal there. The arm for the latch is further inboard and makes it easier to insert into door. The paint had worn off mine and the vinyl gasket was ripped {no reproductions yet} no damage other than that. I think Ill hang onto them and have them painted for later.
