I just changed the pan fluid and filter in a 99 2WD 4L60E. I measured what I took out, put back in the same amount, then topped off with an extra .5qt over about 20min of driving and measuring. My measurements show the fluid level to be right at the top of the HOT range when piping hot.

Should I pull a little out? Is it that sensitive?

Interweb opinion seems to swerve wildly from the top of the HOT zone is dancing with the devil to .5qt over is still fine.

I should probably add that it shifts butter smooth. No problems...... yet.

That should be fine. Usually anything under the squiggly little part in the stick is ok. If you're ever under there again I would make sure the vent hose is connected to the vent pipe on top of the transmission and run down the driver side away from the exhaust. The 99's had a TCC slip problem that will cause the fluid to blow out the vent.
